Winning Is Not Everything at WVU
Good for West Virginia University football Coach Neal Brown for making it clear winning is not everything on his watch.
Just before the Mountaineers played their season opener at home — beating Eastern Kentucky, 56-10 — Brown announced 11 WVU players had been suspended for the game. Among them were at least three players who had been expected to start the game.
Brown, emphasizing the suspensions were not related to the COVID-19 epidemic, said the action was taken because the players violated unspecified team rules.
Too often, the public hears of big-school atheletes who seem to lead charmed lives. Because they are winners, the rules everyone else has to live by do not seem to apply to them.
That is not the situation at WVU. Brown clearly believes in building character, not just winning football games. The suspensions ought to be applauded by WVU fans.
