Make it Shine In West Virginia

As spring approaches, West Virginia residents may turn to cleaning up their yards or larger properties. Winter takes its toll. On a larger scale, it is time to think about this year’s West Virginia Make It Shine Statewide Cleanup, which has been pushed back to May 1-15 to give more time for the fight against COVID-19.

But the application period has already begun. Community groups interested in volunteering for the effort have until April 2 to sign up at apps.dep.wv.gov/ppod/make_it_shine.a5w.

Make It Shine, which is sponsored by the state Department of Environmental Protection Action Plan, will provide cleanup materials, waste hauling and landfill fees to groups that clean up litter around state streams or on public lands.

Of course, measures such as the wearing of masks and social distancing are still suggested, but given the wide-open outdoor nature of this event, it may present the perfect opportunity for local groups to get back in action after what might have been a long year off.

More than 4,300 volunteers participated in the 2019 statewide spring cleanup. They got rid of nearly 180 tons of litter and more than 2,000 tires from Mountain State public lands. But there was no even held in 2020. That may mean this year’s haul is even more important to pick up. Don’t miss this opportunity to part of making Almost Heaven even more beautiful.
