Ohio Needs Leadership

Ohio’s Department of Education is adrift, and one must wonder whether Steve Dackin, the most recent person to leave the state superintendent’s post, will face any consequences for his questionable actions.

Dackin had been a member of the state Board of Education, tasked with finding a new state superintendent. It appears as though he used the role to his advantage.

“He uses his time while he was (on the board) to actually figure out what is it we need and come up with all of the kinds of job search requirements,” Catherine Turcer, spokesperson for Common Cause Ohio, told News 5 Cleveland. “Then we get to … the end of all of that planning, and he quickly resigns and puts in his own application at the last minute.”

But after only a few months on the job, Dackin quit. Meanwhile, lawmakers are busily meddling in all sorts of education legislation, Ohio’s school districts are spending the summer trying to figure out how to respond to another school shooting, and the 2022-23 school year is approaching quickly.

Ohio’s Department of Education needs a leader. Dackin’s behavior has compromised that process.

Though the Ethics Commission is unable to comment as to whether Dackin is part of an active investigation, Ohio taxpayers surely hope they are looking into the matter.

Those tasked with finding a new superintendent must be looking for a strong, ethical leader who will put Ohio’s kids first.
