With events around the globe right now, it is hard to imagine how the words “Peace on Earth” have any true relevance anymore.

To many people this Christmas season, that phrase is considered obsolete, just a minuscule remnant of a better time, although looking at this planet as a whole, there never has been a time of absolute peace, happiness and joy.

Belief in the meaning of Christmas and all that it represents is far from being universal. Many people don’t believe that there ever was a Christ Child or that Jesus came to Earth to give salvation for mankind. But for those who believe — the young, the old and all in between — Christmas retains a very special part of their lives, taking precedence over much of the routine things and activities that usually dominate their daily lives.

Many families are skilled in mixing the religious and secular aspects of the holiday into an observance that all family members can appreciate.

Although children become consumed by the anticipation of Santa Claus and Christmas gifts, many parents rightly try to impart to young family members that there are two aspects of the holiday that need to be emphasized and acknowledged by all.

Meanwhile, hope could reign, even if only on this one day, if all peoples of the world would dedicate themselves to harmony, understanding and faith in the goodness of others, rather than just seeking out excuses or justifications to criticize, condemn or fight.

Additionally, not to be ignored is the tragic, senseless, avoidable aspect of every Christmas holiday season.

Accidents due to impaired driving; domestic violence calls; at a time when we should be celebrating all that’s good in our lives, there are some who go too far.

For the individuals or families involved or affected, much or all of their Christmas spirit and celebrations came to an abrupt end because of carelessness, poor judgment or irresponsible conduct.

As we go through this special week and look toward the new year, let us exercise sound judgment and ensure we enter 2024 positioned for a strong year.

In his Christmas Day 2018 message to the world, Pope Francis offered a Christmas wish that is as apropos today as it was then.

The pontiff encouraged fraternity among people of different nations, cultures, faiths, races or ideas, describing the world’s differences as a richness, not a danger.

He said the universal message of Christmas is that “God is a good Father and we are all brothers and sisters. This truth is the basis of the Christian vision of humanity.”

Francis added that without fraternity “even our best plans and projects risk being soulless and empty.”

Amid this Christmas observance, and considering the fragility of today’s world, the need for wisdom on the part of all nations and peoples is clear. Let us work toward peace and goodwill for all. Let us hope for a better future for our children and grandchildren. Let us work to help make that happen — be part of the solution of making a better world, don’t be part of its current problems.

As we head toward a new year, let us always remember that wisdom and peace go hand in hand. Let wisdom be not elusive; let us open our hearts to the truth.
