Patriot Athletes Earn Praise

Editor, News-Register:

Recently, our family attended the Parkersburg South vs. Wheeling Park basketball game at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center. We knew the game was about more than just hoops; it was a game to create awareness about a very rare condition called Friedreich’s Ataxia.

Our daughter, Anna, was diagnosed on the first day of school her sophomore year. The South Patriots and the entire community have been very supportive of our cause. The kids have formed #Anna’s Army and wear purple to show support. The students have held various fundraisers for research because currently, there is no treatment or cure for this neuromuscular disease.

We knew it would be a night of celebration and creating awareness, but we were brought to our knees when we saw the Wheeling Park Patriots warming up in purple shirts. Proceeds from concessions and 50/50 were donated to research and the Wheeling Park team made a sizable donation.

It didn’t matter what the scoreboard said, the real victory was two communities coming together for a worthy cause. Scientists are getting close to a cure and our communities will push us over the finish line. Thank you, Patriots of both communities, for all the support.
