Cut Wheeling Budget

Editor, News-Register:

Yes that’s right: Wheeling needs to make cuts to its budget. The people voted against the public safety building; the citizens can’t or don’t want any additional taxes. We already have the burden of the fire service fee each year, along with rising property taxes and increases in homeowners insurance along with everything else in this country going up in price. Our city leaders are still trying to find a way to tax the citizens to build the public safety building. We can’t afford the public service building; once built we will have to do maintenance on it that means hiring several people for that, and we will have to insure it. The cost will go on and on. The city could make manpower reductions in every department except police to help fund the building. That would be a first and fair step in funding the building, instead of having the taxpayer pay another fire service fee. We are funding the Capitol Music Hall, walking trail maintenance, Oglebay Park — who knows what else — certainly not the fire department.
