An Award-Winning Acting Job; and Buying Local

Editor’s note: Reporters are constantly surveying their surroundings, and in doing so often turn up many tidbits of news that don’t make it into the daily newspaper.

This space serves as a spot to aggregate and publish those items that otherwise would stay locked away forever in the reporters’ notebook.

Road Work

Just as it has since employees were working in the summer sunshine, the Ohio Department of Transportation continues construction on Interstate 70 between St. Clairsville and the Ohio River. However, the lanes often seem to be blocked for no apparent reason, as no workers appear to be on the job at the time.

With snow and ice on the way this winter, the department needs to get this construction done as quickly as possible. Motorists need to have access to as many lanes as possible amid treacherous driving conditions.

Shop Local

In the hustle and bustle of the Christmas shopping season, it is easy to get caught up in traveling to large malls and shopping plazas.

However, one can often find unique gifts and deals at smaller shops run by independent owners. Virtually all villages in the Upper Ohio Valley still feature some small businesses, which owners operate at the will of their customers.

Do not forget to patronize small businesses while during your holiday shopping.

Winter Hideout

The Moundsville Activities Committee stored their hanging flower baskets for the winter Thursday. This spring, the arrangements will again decorate the poles along Jefferson Avenue.

Leading Man

Perhaps the Oscar for the best acting performance by an elected official starring in a video shown at a holiday breakfast will go to Ohio County Commissioner Orphy Klempa.

Those attending this week’s Project BEST holiday breakfast – expecting off-color comedy quips from co-chairman Tom Cerra – were shown a mini-movie introduced by Cerra titled “Interview With Uncle Nunzio.” In the clip, the interview was conducted by Wheeling Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director Frank O’Brien, who asked Nunzio about the search for a missing county commissioner.

Getting the most reaction in the video was a shot depicting the back of a black Cadillac. When the trunk was opened, Klempa was shown wide-eyed and bound and gagged inside – presumably put there by Nunzio and his men.

Also included in the performance was Ohio County Prosecutor Scott Smith, who stood up in the crowd after the clip and announced he knew the identity of the nefarious Uncle Nunzio.

“Who’s going to start your car when you leave?” Cerra asked him.

“Never mind,” Smith replied.

New Job

Former Belmont County Director of Senior Services David Hacker has a new job. He is the new human resources manager for Aladdin Food Management Services LLC.

A Clear View

Specified Systems Inc. of Canonsburg, Pa., workers Rex Flemming and Eric Godfrey have been working for weeks to install new panes of glass at the United Bank in downtown Wheeling. Flemming estimated the old panes, which were one large piece of glass, weighed about 750 to 1,000 pounds apiece, while the new smaller panes weigh about 400 pounds each.

Curbing Drugs

The Ohio County Substance Abuse Coalition held work sessions with various organizations last week to get new ideas on how to stop children and adults from doing drugs. Results from the Partnership Planning Retreat are expected to be released at a later date.
