Enhancing One-Way Streets Downtown
Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott has backed away from his proposal to convert downtown sections of Main and Market streets to two-way traffic. Instead, he said last week, he will suggest an “enhanced one-way” plan as part of the business district “streetscaping” project.
Good. Too many city residents and business people disliked the idea of converting one-way streets to traffic in both directions. Some seem ready to embrace the “enhanced one-way” plan, however.
It sounds promising. Elliott believes it would make downtown Wheeling more appealing and safe for pedestrians — more “walkable.”
Before proceeding, however, all concerned should take a close look at the new proposal. If minor tweaks are needed for it to be a consensus choice, they should be made.
