Lions Hear Progress Report on Monarch Stadium Project

Moundsville Lions Club members were provided with an update on work being done at Monarch Stadium, along with other information dealing with the 20 sports programs and four club activities, by Athletic Director Rob Chavanak at this past Tuesday’s Lions meeting.

Two undertakings expected to begin in the next two weeks will be pouring asphalt on the new eight- lane track, and the arrival of the new press box, which is scheduled for Oct. 5.

The press box will be in use for the first time on Oct. 26, which is the next regular-season home game. The Monarchs have reached the halfway point of the regular season and of the final five games, one is at home and the other four are on the road.

Chavanak said among work slated for the second phase of the new multi-purpose field will be construction of team lockers, an officials’ locker room, a concession stand, restrooms, a new entrance way, and a new Friends of Monarch Stadium “Wall.”

When asked whether there will be an entrance at the south end of the stadium, Chavanak said there will be one, located in the vicinity of the Fieldhouse.

Chavanak was also asked about whether Court Avenue behind the east side of the field would be open to vehicular traffic, and he replied that it would be one lane. On game days that area would be limited to pedistrian traffic only.

The athletic director said that one project which has yet to be finalized is removal of the old swimming pool building, which if eliminated would provide for much-needed parking space. The building is currently being used by visiting football teams.

Because the north end of the field has been extended 30 yards northward, in order to have an eight-lane track, the number of parking spaces has been reduced.

Chavanak said that while the stadium is for multi-use, hopefully some OVAC and WVSSAC events will be held at the facility.

For the past few years, the OVAC has held its 3-A and 5-A dual wrestling events at the Monarch Fieldhouse. These two events are named in honor of former JMHS wrestling coach Bill Hinegardner.

Another question posed to Chavanak had to do with the baseball field located at the school. Chavanak said that recent rains had not damaged the field. He was also asked about the possibility of lights at the baseball field, and he told the Lions members that electrical service is in place should it be decided to install lights there.

The 2-6 age event will take place on Oct. 29 at the WVP’s Training Center, while the family attraction will take place on Oct. 30. The latter will be a smaller version of the Dungeon of Horrors.

Also during October, there will be two other attractions, The North Walk, a flashlight tour through areas of the prison known for having the most paranormal activity, and Whiskey Dick’s Saloon (paintball). Tickets for these two events are to also be purchased on line.
