DeWine Is Right On Critical Issues

Richard Cordray, who is running for governor in Ohio, has made it clear he is out of step with the thinking of many Ohioans. Too many, in fact.

As his opponent, state Attorney General Mike DeWine, has pointed out, Cordray’s thinking on school safety and the drug abuse crisis is more than misguided. It may be dangerous.

The issues have come up during debates between Republican DeWine and Democrat Cordray, in Marietta and Cleveland.

School safety came up in Marietta. There, Cordray said Ohio needs new gun laws including universal background checks and bans on high-capacity firearms magazines. “We have to exert leadership and face the real problem,” he said.

Yes, we do. But DeWine’s formula addresses the real problem. He wants more school resource officers to protect children and better mental health services for students and teachers.

DeWine, in short, understands more gun laws will not prevent school shootings. Cordray does not.

During their encounter in Cleveland, Issue 1 on the general election ballot Nov. 6 came up. Issue 1 would, if approved, require most illicit drug possession offenses be treated as misdemeanors, not felonies. Jail or prison time would be banned for first and second offenses in most cases.

Cordray supports Issue 1. DeWine, recognizing it would make the state’s substance abuse crisis worse, opposes it.

Thoughtful Ohioans, then, will recognize that on critical issues, Cordray is wrong — and DeWine is right.
