n To Karen Laska and Jordan Miller, who are among five West Virginia University students chosen this year for the prestigious national Fulbright Scholarships. Miller and Laska are graduates of Wheeling Park High School.

n To Wheeling restauranteur Charlie Schlegel, named as the 2019 winner of the Good Samaritan award. It is bestowed by Youth Services System of Wheeling. Schlegel will be honored at the YSS annual dinner on Aug. 16.

n To members of American Legion Post 1 in Wheeling, celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Post Commander John Powell has a document indicating our Legion post was the first in the nation.

n To Martins Ferry native Terry Wildman, who now serves as a professional firefighter in Columbus. Wildman and two other men received Firefighter of the Year awards from a Columbus American Legion post, for saving the life of a man they rescued from a burning building.

n To Hydie Friend and the Hess family of Wheeling, honored by the Oglebay Foundation for contributions of both effort and money to benefit the city’s park system. Friend received the G. Randolph Worls Spirit of Oglebay Award. The Hess family received the Gary and Flip West Leadership in Philanthropy Award.
