Marshall Memo: Back-to-School Fun Fair Set for Wednesday; Splash Pad Update

A Back-to-School Community Blood Drive will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 20 in the gymnasium of John Marshall High School.

This will be the 37th such event, the last seven being sponsored by Vitalant.

The school has a Blood Drive Club whose co-advisors are Kathleen Loughman and Alexa Bushovisky and the club has setup a scholarship to which seniors are eligible to receive funding from the blood drive.

Since school will not be in session on Aug. 20, students will be required to schedule an appointment; those planning to donate blood are to go to DonateBlood.CentralBloodBank.org. Enter group code HS010209 to schedule your donation for the John Marshall High School blood drive.

Also, teachers, staff and the general public will need to schedule an appointment.

To be eligible to give blood a student must be 16 years of age and older.

As to Vitalant, this firm exists to help people realize their life-transforming potential by offering convenient blood donation opportunities and sharing its expertise in transfusion medicine.

The 21st annual Marshall County Back-to-School Fun Fair will take place this Wednesday at the Marshall County Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. until noon.

This year’s Fair will again be conducted as a drive-through.

Participants are to enter the fairgrounds from 12th Street, and must stay in their vehicles. They are to continue out the Myrtle Avenue gate.

The Fun Fair is open to all Marshall County School students, Pre-K through 12th grade, who must be accompanied by an adult.

There are no income guidelines. Each child will receive a free backpack filled with school supplies such as pencils, pens, notebooks and more.

The Fun Fair was started in 2000 by Marshall County Schools employee Susie Baker, and since its inception has become a popular way for Marshall County students to celebrate their return to school.

Last year, more than 1,600 families took part in the event.

Monarch Stadium Community Night will change beginning this Sunday.

Instead of individuals using the stadium on Mondays. Wednesdays and Fridays, the new time will be 4-7 p.m. on Sundays, through October.

Everyone is invited to use the track and field.

The Marshall County Board of Education recently voted to approve an Oil and Gas Lease with SWN Production Co.

The acreage was 103.49 acres at $4,000 and 18.75% royalty.

The area where the oil and gas is located is in the Sherrard area.

According to board members, the monies from this sale will be used for projects which were not in the current budget.

Construction of a Mt. Olivet Lions Club Veterans Monument is scheduled to begin in the fall.

It will be placed in the vicinity of the Flags for Heroes display at the Mount Olivet Community Park.

The monument will represent the service and sacrifice of individuals who have served in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Space Force units.

This vision of the Mt. Olivet Lions is becoming a reality due to the support of the hilltop and community members.

Proceeds from the three years of sponsorships for the Flags for Heroes project, and generous contributions from individuals and organizations has made it become a reality.

Also, the MOL are currently providing pavers which will be placed in the courtyard in front of the monument. These pavers will show and honor and respect to individuals who served their country, as well as those HEROES which have a special impact on the sponsor’s life. They could be anyone from Military, Law Enforcement, Medical Providers, Family Members, First Responders, Teachers, (past or present), etc.

Moundsville Recreation Director John White is hoping that the Splash Pad at Four Seasons Pool will be up-and-running by Aug. 9.

This past week the Lombardi Contractors completed the installation of the different attractions.

White said this coming week he is hopeful that all of the plumbing work passes inspection. If indeed the Splash Pad is ready to open the second week of August it will mean that it will open a month earlier than anticipated.

White also noted that baseball and softball camps for 5 to 8 year olds were held at the East End Playground this past week with both well attended.

It happened! The number of signups for the Moundsville High School Homecoming Dinner Celebration on Sept. 4 reached its goal. The goal was 300, and the figure as of Thursday evening was 314.

Other figures announced at Thursday’s meeting were: the Hospitality get-together on Sept. 3, being 363, and the Sports Luncheon on Sept. 4, being 34. While three floats have been designed for the Parade the parade committee needs three flatbed pickup trucks to carry the floats. If anyone can supply this need they are asked to contact Roger Smith at 304-242-0190.
