Fowl Play

July 3, 2013 - Heather Ziegler
First there was just a couple, two. I figure they were man and wife, or duck and ducktress. Two mallards have been greeting people early in the morning on 14th Street near the Intermodal Center for more than a year now. It wasn't hard to figure out why. On the sidewalk across the street someone has spread a banquet of bread crumbs or other items that bring these feathered friends to breakfast. Well this week, the duck family has brought its own dynasty to the Friendly City. At least a half dozen were among the flock waiting to be fed this morning. I like the ducks but I worry they will be run over. And the Canada geese are making their marks on Heritage Port in larger numbers again. They make such a mess. As for the ducks, I don't see a lot of mess from them and they eat every morsel left to them. However, a reminder that it is against city code to ground feed any creatures. Anyone with a bird feeder in their backyard knows that birds aren't the only things showing up to feed. Squirrels, raccoons, possums, rats and even bears can be attracted to feeders if there is a significant amount of seed hitting the ground.
