I worked at Ernie's in Bethlehem as a dishwasher in 78. Never had a problem with Ernie. Always seemed like a nice guy. I did hear him go off on someone everyonce in a while, but most of the time, they deserved it. Never saw any bugs like anyone mentioned. The place was in pretty good condition when I worked there. About the only time I really got introuble was when I caleaned all their cooking skillets in hot, soapy water. It ruined the patina!

did anyone know a person who worked there? I did a few as a matter of fact. the abuse they took was off the wall. some times there was no paycheck waiting on payday if they had no biz the week before. glad to see it close. you can't treat people like trash and then expect them to work like slaves.

Is there no one or nothing in the valley that anyone is happy to remember or still be proud of yet today? Seems to be the same bitter people posting all the time. I agree, those were the days and I'm glad the Equire was there.

Hefner, you have a point. 40 to 50 years ago that place, and most of his places were cranking. When the plants started closing, a whole lot of places went belly up. Some, like Pandelos, tried to keep going but the writing was on the wall and gradual deterioration set in.

People went from buying steaks at Ernies to buying roast beef sandwiches at Arbys.

Ernie was a typical Greek....he would buy the state of WV if he could borrow the money. And he was always behind in making payments...if he did make them. Most of his places failed...Charleston, Erie PA, Butler,....the Cork and this place that has been insect and rodent infested for years. Ernie led a life of oppulence on other peoples hard work and money.

I worked for Ernie back in the day...saw him cuss out and jack up kids all the time...he was a mean disgusting scary SOB. Now his legacy of crumbling buildings and eyesores are scattered across the community...kind of like Sparchane's...for example...the crumbling 1056 does that stay open?..well we know.

How about all of those fuzzy nude hefer pics he had upstairs?

Those commenting here obviously don't remember the glory days of the Esquire Club. When Wheeling, to the naked eye, was still booming the Esquire and Ernie were staples in that boom. Sure it all went to hell, but has Bob Hope used to say, and I say to Ernie, "Thanks for the memories."

Why are there no pictures of the inside? Is it because the building is going to collapse in on itself like the house from Poltergeist?

Maybe the slumlord dirt bag will make enough profit to take care of his other slum properties, the article makes him seem like a saint. the man is a POS

Fifteen years ago a busgurl told me "there are roaches EVEN IN the ice machine"...ya go ahead and buy it...biggest sham Wheeling ever had in terms of restaurants and health code violation that were obviously paid off for decades.

Ernie was a serial skirt chaser with a well deserved reputation as a POS. Ask anyone who worked for him.

Maybe former Pirates Bob Robertson and Richie Hebner will buy it.
