PINE GROVE - Valley softball coach Gary Partridge is glowing about his team's attitude, saying it's one of the best he's ever had.

Whether that results in victories is yet to be seen.

"We are going to mixing some old with new," Partridge said. "We lost some heavy hitters but the work ethic with this team, the attitude has been great and there is no drama.

"They are really jelling together and I am seeing a lot of positive things. They are working hard and that is all that a coach can ask."

Partridge knows in softball that it all starts with pitching and he has a good combination in three-year starter Holly Schell and junior Megan Bucher.

Schell is more of a finesse pitcher, while Bucher will bring the heat.

Partridge's hope is to work both of them into the game to give teams multiple looks.

"Let's face it, you have to build a team around a pitcher," Partridge said. "We have two good ones and Megan is really coming along after playing some summer ball."

Once the ball is hit, Partridge is confident in his infield.

Bucher will play mainly first base when she isn't pitching.

Second base will be manned by either Brooke Staley or Kaitlyn Midcap. At shortstop is senior Jessica Loy.

At the hot corner is junior Jessica Ashcraft.

"Our infield can handle just about anybody," Partridge said. "Our outfield is growing up quickly. We have some young girls out there so we will have to wait and see."

Midcap will see time in center with sophomore Arizona Cunningham playing in left. Right field will be between a battle of sisters in Angela Sharpe and Alyssa Sharpe.

Dani Hayes will be behind the plate.

On the bench, Partridge will have freshmen Megan Martin and Kara Hindman to turn to for at-bats.

"Megan Bucher is a good hitter and we expect a lot out of Dani Hayes and Jessica Loy," Partridge said. "Jessica Ashcraft is coming on strong so I am seeing good things at the plate.

"We have about 14, 15 girls but there is a little inexperience. But they are working real hard. We know it all goes through Cameron so hopefully we are ready by then."
