STEUBENVILLE - Wheeling Park captured victories in three of four relays en route to winning the Early Bird Invitational on Saturday at Harding Stadium to open the prep track and field season.
The Patriots edged Oak Glen (136-131) to win the event. Edison was third with 70 points, followed by Steubenville (58), Brooke (37), Indian Creek (34), Beaver Local (20) and Buckeye Local (10).
Cleveland Glenville rolled to the boys' title with 125 points. Oak Glen was second with 92, followed by Wheeling Park (85), Steubenville (57), Edison (50), Indian Creek (43), Brooke (26), Buckeye Local (10) and Beaver Local (4).
Park's girls won the 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter relays. Oak Glen won the 3,200 relay, with Park second.
Ashley Grove raced to victory in the 200 for Park, while Tamara Bumgardner captured the 100 hurdles.
Winners for the Golden Bears included: Alexis Burch (100), Megan Collins (400), and Kelsey Chambers (1,600 and 3,200).
Albert Schrimp was the lone winner for Park in the boys' event, taking the 3,200.
Josh Weltner won the high jump for the Golden Bears, while teammate Zach Staley captured the discus.
Glenville won nine events, including all four relays.
