Get Involved to Help Protect Our Water

April 14, 2013
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Editor, News-Register:

I would like to let everyone know about a new Facebook page that was recently created: Wheeling Water Warriors or www.facebook.com/wheelingwaterwarriors.

The Wheeling Water Warriors Facebook page was created to bring people together around the issue of clean, safe water for our community. The page has some calls to action for everyone in our community. The first call to action is for community members to attend the city council meeting this Tuesday evening at 5:30 pm to speak out against the fracking waste treatment plant that is proposed for Warwood.

Some things we must consider in regard to the proposed fracking waste treatment plant in Warwood include:

1. Do you know there are radioactive wastes and cancer causing chemicals in that frack waste?

2. Who is going to pay to get our drinking water clean and safe? (At the bottom of www.cleanwater4wheelingnow.com it says that our current water treatment facility can't handle the frack waste we currently have. Do we really want to add more frack waste?)

3. Who is going to help take care of our medical issues when we get sick from these toxins being dumped into our water supply?

4. If you think we are being controlled by big business through the fuel industries, what do you think will happen when we are controlled through water industries?

We can't drink money. We can't thrive without clean, safe water.

5. What do we want to leave the future generations to deal with?

I'm sure there are many more factors to consider. Those are a just few concerns that came to mind.

Furthermore, another event that is planned is an Earth Day gathering on Sunday, April 21 from 2-5 p.m. at Warwood Garden Park. Everyone throughout the community is encouraged to get involved in both events.

We all want to help make our community and our world a better place. Often things can seem so overwhelming that we don't know what we can do. Everyone has their part to play. We can all come together to make a difference.

In closing, I would like to leave you with this quote. I am not sure who said it.

"I looked around and wondered why somebody didn't do something. Then I remembered I am somebody!"

Please check out the Wheeling Water Warriors Facebook page and get involved.
