The cost of a few dozen trips by Ohio County sheriff's deputies to transport prisoners from the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville to court proceedings at the City-County Building in Wheeling would pay for a simple system that could eliminate the need for such travel.
During an Ohio County Commission meeting Monday, Sheriff Pat Butler and Commissioner Randy Wharton expressed concern about the cost of having deputies transport prisoners between the regional jail and Wheeling. "It makes no sense to me to bring 17 people up here for a five-minute hearing," Wharton told a regional jail system representative.
Butler asked why a video link between the jail and the City-County Building could not be used for some hearings.
That is a good idea. It ought to be considered by court and regional jail officials. The less time deputies are transporting prisoners, the more time they will have to enforce the law.
