The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Peterson Rehabilitation Hospital & Geriatric Center, the leading provider of nursing and therapy services in the Ohio Valley, is rolling with the fast and furious changes in the health care industry today. Peterson offers Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation, Skilled Nursing Services, Long Term Living, Outpatient Therapy, and a myriad of specialized therapies including certified specialists to provide Lymphedema services. The changes in health care and insurance programs are being abetted by our keen ability to individualize each patient's treatment plan for care in a manner that ensures all who enter our doors are the recipients of an outstanding and successful program.

Known for providing superior outcomes and returning more patients back to their homes in the community, Peterson employs the largest complement of physical, occupational, and speech therapists in the Ohio Valley. Our large therapy department provides opportunities for the therapists to work one on one with the patients/residents thereby providing individualized care.

The therapy department at Peterson utilizes state of the art technology and the new equipment enables the therapists to treat more complex conditions and improve neuromuscular control in patients with orthopedic and neurological conditions.

Peterson is the only rehabilitation facility in the State of West Virginia that has partnered with the National Stroke Association.

Our alignment with the organization has provided us with the state of the art resources to ensure our delivery of the best practices in stroke rehabilitation as we routinely access the most updated research and therapy modalities. Our registered nurses are educated and tested using the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and as such are certified to identify signs and symptoms of stroke to ensure early intervention and treatment. Peterson's "Excellence in Stroke Rehabilitation" program has a proven track record. Please allow us to share the thoughts about our program from former patients:

"The therapists and nurses at Peterson helped me regain speech, walking, and balance. I felt like a wet noodle when I was admitted to the Acute Rehabilitation Hospital and I went home with the knowledge of exercises to regain use of my right arm. I contribute my success mainly to the therapists that worked with me and the positive attitudes that they displayed in therapy. The best part about coming to Peterson was all the attention to detail in the care of each individual. I started feeling better about myself and they had my confidence built so high that there was no way I could fail." - Mr. Simms

"I went to Peterson because my wife's mother had been there and the people from church said to go there for my therapy and I am glad that I did. When I was admitted to the Acute Rehabilitation Hospital I didn't have any movement in my right arm from my stroke and just a few days at Peterson and in therapy I could care for myself again by doing tasks like dressing, walking, bathing, and toileting. I believe that the therapy and nursing care at Peterson is what made my rehabilitation successful. The best part about coming to Peterson is having fun and the small and large improvements that were made." - Mr. Wheeler

Peterson recently welcomed Kate Krupa, full-time nurse practitioner to our medical staff. She is onsite five days a week and serves as a liaison between the professional nursing staff and the physician staff. Peterson is unique in that we proudly have a large complement of physicians and nurse practitioners providing coverage seven days per week in order to provide excellent medical coverage to our high volume of acutely ill patients and to provide timely intervention that serves to avoid the stress that re-hospitalization places on our patients.

We would embrace the opportunity to serve you or your loved one. Our team is available to provide free in home patient evaluations, personalized tours of the facility, and answer any questions you may have regarding our services upon request. We have a 24-hour, 7-day a week admissions on-call program to accommodate your schedule. Call 304-234-0538 or visit us on the web at
