Officials and staff at Eastern Gateway Community College in Steubenville had to have suspected they would do well in a statewide comparison of enrollment among institutions of higher learning. After all, EGCC offers two attributes more and more young people are seeking - solid career training and reasonable prices.
But when the numbers were reported last week, they may have surprised even those at EGCC: The college's 2013 enrollment was 15 percent higher than in 2012. That was the highest increase of any of the 61 Ohio institutions of higher learning that were included in the report. In fact, even though it competed against colleges and universities throughout the state, EGCC's increase was the only one in double digits.
It just makes sense. Again, like many community colleges, EGCC has excellent career training programs. And for those planning to continue their educations, it provides an excellent two-year start.
All this is accomplished at very reasonable prices.
EGCC staff, officials and students should be proud. Those at other colleges and universities should take note of the secret to EGCC's success.
