LONDON (AP) - Numerous people were injured and others were trapped after a police helicopter crashed on the roof of a crowded Glasgow pub, officials said early today.
Authoritiessaid some people from the Clutha pub in the city center had been taken to hospitals but that it was too soon to go into detail on the number of casualties.
"Given an incident of this scale we must all prepare ourselves for the likelihood of fatalities," Scotland's leader, Alex Salmond, said on his official Twitter account.
The crash Friday night at around 10:30 p.m. local time sent patrons and revelers catching a gig by ska band Esperanza fleeing through a cloud of dust. Witnesses spoke of screams and a scene of horror, of people streaming out of the building covered in blood, with gashes and other injuries.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Assistant Chief Officer Lewis Ramsay said teams - including 125 firefighters - were working to stabilize the building and "get people out."
