WHEELING - Co-chair of the Centre Market Wing Festival Greg Myers said he hopes the second annual event lives up to its first year, which was dramatically more successful than anticipated.

"It was well over expectations last year," said Myers, who owns Casa di Vino and The Market Vines along with his wife, Diane. "We expected about a thousand people. We had three to four (thousand) show up."

The Centre Market Wing Festival takes over the area around Centre Market in Wheeling on June 14, with local vendors setting up stands and booths for their wings and a wing contest held for first, second and third place. Additionally, Myers said three local bands will perform at the event, including Brett Cain, Bone Daddy and Hit Play.

"We sold over 17,000 wings last year," Centre Market Manager Kurt Zende said.

By the end of the event vendors ran out of wings to offer patrons. To help meet demand, Zende said even more vendors will be participating.

"We had 12 vendors last year," Zende said. "This year we expect to have four or five more."

So far, participating vendors include The Market Vines, Ye Olde Alpha, River City, Ruttenbucks, Cassiopeia Catering, Figaretti's Restaurant, Good Stuff Barbecue, The Wild West Sports Bar, Pickles' Grog and Grill, C&D's Irish Pub, Deano's, Liberty Tavern, Gulla's, The 19th Hole and Quaker Steak and Lube.

Zende added several downtown Wheeling roads will be closed for the event, including 22nd and 23rd streets and part of Main and Market streets. He said detours will be set up for the duration and visitors are encouraged to take advantage of public parking garages.

Anticipating another healthy turnout, Myers said the festival committee will be adding to its facilities by putting up tents and bringing in portable restroom facilities.

This year's Centre Market Wing Festival will begin at 11 a.m. and go until 11 p.m. Wings are served until 9 p.m., with live music beginning at 4 p.m. and lasting until the end. All proceeds from the sale of wristbands, soda and water go to help Big Brothers Big Sisters.
