Mystery Theatre Unlimited will present "The Pirages of Poughkeepsie" at several locations throughout the Ohio Valley this month.
River City Restaurant will host the show at 7 p.m. July 11. The show also will be presented at Wheeling Park's amphitheater at 7 p.m. July 15, at the Black Sheep Vineyard on July 25 and again at River City on Aug. 15.
When an unlikely band of pirates from an equally unlikely place set forth on a laugh-filled adventure, it leads to an action-adventure murder mystery farce, written by local playwrights Butch Maxwell and Bert Furioli.
In the show, the effete Lord Culler Brecknell (played by Ryan Sears) is determined to impress his fiancee, Elizabeth (played by Shannan Noe), by arresting and hanging some pirates. He targets a band of buccaneers who seem to have lost their taste for the high seas and are sailing the Hudson River near Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
But the tides turn as Brecknell attempts to capture Captain Jack Narrow (played by Maxwell). Before long, Jack faces mutiny by his nemesis, Hector Barbasol (played by Furioli) and his minion, Squeegee (played by Michael Moran), while all five rush to capture the mystical treasure of Montezuma's Revenge.
Sean Decker and Dustin Heavillin will understudy the parts of Squueegee and Barbasol for the July 11 show. Heavilin will act as master of ceremonies at the Wheeling Park performance.
The show is a revival of the 49th original comedy presented by Mystery Theatre over its 18-year reign of humor. The performances include audience interaction and the opportunity to solve a murder mystery. Restaurant performances include a dinner, with the action taking place in a dining room, where the actors will move among the tables.
At all shows, audience members are encouraged to gather clues, talk to the characters and even question the survivors after the murder has occurred. Some audience members will play small parts during the show.
The River City and Black Sheep Vineyard performances include a dinner and the comedy mystery.
