Lots of Questions for Granato, Riders

By MIKE MATHISON

WEIRTON — Things will look a lot different for coach Mike Granato and the Weir High boys’ basketball team.

“The preseason started out in a difficult manner with the loss of both Cam Pierce and Cody Enrietti with leg injuries during football, which will keep them out for the entire season,” Granato said. “When you add in the transfer of Grant Carrigan, we lost a lot of experience.”

There was also the graduation of Jonathan West and Marques Smith, along with Angelo Cassiadoro and Ethan Gilbert.

“Our summer program allowed the emergence of returning senior letterman Levi Mikula and Matt Anderson as leaders,” Granato said. “Lyric Washington (senior, guard) also has worked his way into a leadership role. Dom Murphy will return as a senior post after sitting out his junior season. Murphy lettered as a sophomore.”

The Red Riders, who finished last season 11-12 with a sectional loss to East Fairmont, will have six juniors in Keyshawn Faulks, LaVelle Hall, Frank Ty Hudacheck, Nick Krutilla, Donovan Riggs and Justin Fidler.

“Our junior class, while dressing on the varsity as sophomores, won 14 games last year on the jayvee level,” Granato said. “The injuries will give those kids an opportunity to play and compete on the varsity level.”

The veteran coach also had to deal with the football players getting into the gym late due to their participation in the West Virginia Class AA playoffs.

“Our football team advancing in the playoffs could set us back at the beginning of preseason practice, but we look at that as a good problem to have,” Granato said.
