Weir’s Faulks Named 3rd Team

FAIRMONT — Keyshawn Faulks made the most of his final season in a Weir uniform. It was also his best season.

Leading the way for the Red Riders, the 6-foot-2 guard netted 17.5 points per game while averaging six rebounds a night. Faulks also dished out 3.1 assists per game.

With his impressive numbers, Faulks was named West Virginia Class AA All-State third team by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

The season is not exactly over yet for Faulks as he will suit up one more time and play in the OVAC Samuel A. Mumley All-Star basketball game on April 8.

Wins never come easy in Class AA, with talent seemingly encapsulating the classification from top to bottom as some of West Virginia’s top athletes compete night in and night out with few cakewalks on the schedule.

The best, however, seem to separate themselves, as reflected by this year’s Class AA All-State team.

Five of the eight members of the members of the Class AA All-State first team competed in Saturday’s championship game, with a sixth making it to the state semifinals.

The state runner-up Fairmont Senior High School Polar Bears place three members on the Class AA first-team, with senior guard Taevon Horton being selected as captain. On the year, Horton averaged 19.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game while almost always being matched up with the opponents’ best player.

Two of Horton’s teammates, juniors Zyon Dobbs and Jalen Bridges, also were selected to the first team this year after playing vital roles in getting the Polar Bears to a fourth consecutive state title game.

While Horton, Dobbs and Brides helped lead the Polar Bears to the state title game, so, too, did Chapmanville’s Drew Williamson and Obinna Anochili-Killen, both Class first-team selections who helped the Tigers capture the first state title in school history this season.

Another first-team player who led his team to the state tournament, ultimately reaching the semifinals, was Philip Barbour sharpshooter David Shriver, who scored 22 points per game this year to go along with seven rebounds and four assists.

The Big 10 Conference’s fifth member selected to the first team was North Marion center Jude Akabueze, who averaged 24.9 points and 15 rebounds.

Rounding out the first team is Mingo Central’s Jeremy Dillon, who averaged 20.1 points, eight rebounds and six assists per game this year.

Bluefield’s Mookie Collier helped lead the Beavers to the state tournament once again, and was selected as All-State second team captain. He is joined on the second team by Logan’s David Early, Westside’s Shane Jenkins, Winfield’s Braeden McGrew, Oak Hill’s Andrew Work, Nitro’s Joel Sweat, Westside’s Corey Hatfield and Nicholas County’s Luke LeRose.

After setting a state tournament record with 13 field goals without a miss in the quarterfinals, Philip Barbour’s Cole Whited was selected as third-team captain. Joining him on the third team are Braxton County’s Cole Browning and Tayton Stout, Wyoming East’s McQuade Canada, Berkeley Springs’ Colin Breeden, Nitro’s Qwaille Turner and James Monroe’s McKinley Mann.
