St. C. Falls To Beverly-Lowell

CAMBRIDGE — When you’re hot, you’re hot, but when you’re not, you’re not.

Sunday night St. Clairsville was sitting in the driver’s seat of the American Legion Region 8 baseball tournament. It was 3-0 and awaiting the survivor of the loser’s bracket, which had to beat it twice.

One victory and it was off to the state tournament after a year’s absence.

Fast forward to Wednesday night when Post 159 found itself in a winner-take-all scenario after letting leads of 4-0 and 6-4 slip away in an 8-6 setback 24 hours earlier to Beverly-Lowell Posts 389/750. However, it just wasn’t meant to be as red-hot Beverly-Lowell extended its win streak to four straight with a 16-4 triumph over Post 159 on Don Coss Field inside the City Parks Complex. Posts 389/750 has outscored the opposition by a whopping 57-13 during that stretch, with three games being halted by mercy rules, including Wednesday night’s contest which stopped after six frames.

“That is a really good hitting baseball team,” St. Clairsville manager Mike Muklewicz said while gesturing to where Beverly-Lowell was celebrating. “They hit the cover off the ball.”

While Beverly-Lowell was banging out 13 hits off a trio of St. Clairsville hurlers, it was 10 base-on-balls and three hit batsmen that had Muklewicz scratching his head.

“They scored off of everything,” Muklewicz said. “It is what it is.

“(Tuesday) we kind of threw everything we had at them in knowing we had a chance to end it, but we also knew if we lost we didn’t have much left.”

Posts 389/750 scored three times in the top of the third and led 3-1 entering the fifth. They added four markers for a 7-1 bulge, but Post 159 tried to stay close by tallying three times in the bottom of the inning. Jacob Johnson had a two-run double to deep center and raced home on a wild pitch.

However, Beverly-Lowell unloaded in the sixth as Tyler Bradford launched a two-run homer well over the 350-sign in deep right-center. After Logan Isner was unintentionally hit in the helmet, Clayton Cook sent a two-run blast onto the street behind the left field fence. All told, the Washington County squad put up nine runs as 14 batters went to the plate.

“We had a great year … a lot of success,” Muklewicz said. “We’ll go back to the drawing board, get a few more pieces and see where we’re at next year.”

Kyle Storer and Jakob Jarvis evenly divided four singles for Post 159. Logan Elliott had a run-scoring double.

Bradford doubled twice and tripled in addition to his long ball. He finished with three runs batted in. Cook finished a single shy of the cycle and had five RBI. Isner singled twice and knocked in a pair.

Mason Ramsay took the loss. he fanned four, walked six and allowed three hits before giving way to Drake Dobson in the fifth.
