NEW MARTINSVILLE — Magnolia volleyball coach Pam Chapman knew that her team was going to play tough against a talented Tyler Consolidated squad. She also knew that there was going to be some adversity the Blue Eagles would have to go through.

After dropping the first set, the Blue Eagles were able to regroup and secure three straight victories as they defeated the Silver Knights 18-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-17 at Magnolia High School Tuesday night.

“We knew coming in it was going to be loud,” Chapman said. “We knew they (Tyler) was going to come in and ready to play. They’re a good ball team. You can’t take anything away from them. Bur we have practiced really hard all week and we kept telling the girls that there were going to be ups and downs in this game and you will have to find a way to work through that. We were down at some point, and we told them to keep pushing, stick with the game plan we had and they did. It worked out well for us.”

Magnolia also saw a little bit adversity in the third set as it was in an 11-4 hole in the early going. However, the Blue Eagles scored nine of the next 11 points to even the set at 13-13.

The set saw one more time at 16-16 before the Blue Eagles scored six of the next seven points to take a commanding lead that all but put the set away. After Tyler Consolidated made one final attempt to get within three at 22-19, Magnolia scored the final three points to take the third set.

“This is a team effort,” Chapman said. Our libero did a nice job of passing. She was all over the floor tonight. And our two middles, they just hit. It’s hard to stop them. They did a fantastic job. Our center gets the ball to them. This is a total team effort. It took everybody (Tuesday). It just wasn’t one person. But those three kids and our center, they did a very nice job for us.”

Mady Winters stuffed the stat sheet for Magnolia with 10 points, four aces, 19 kills, 13 digs and seven blocks while Kyndra Pilant compiled eight points, 22 kills, 15 digs and six blocks. Lenieca Grimm had three points, 41 assists and nine digs while Kayna Anderson tallied 20 digs. Liza Clegg was solid with five points and 11 digs while Alyssa Kocher had seven digs and Jaci Rhode had five digs.

Zoey Jenkins tallied three points and Kennedy Parsons had six digs.

In the fourth set, the Blue Eagles never trailed, which secured the Blue Eagles’ second victory over the Silver Knights this season.

“Against a team like Magnolia or against any good team, you can’ send that many free balls over the net,” Tyler Consolidated coach Richard Summer said. “We were out of system, threw a lot of balls back over there and you give those kind of girls a swing at it, you can only dig so much. We were out of system all night. It’s like a fumble in football.”

As expected, it was a back and forth affair during the first set. But Tyler Consolidated started heating up. With the score tied at 17-17, the Silver Knights rattled off eight of the final nine points to secure the set, 25-18.

“I do think that’s two of the best programs in the state,” Tyler Consolidated coach Richard Summers said. “And to come in here and play on their home floor is not an easy thing. That was the second time we played, and they won both of them. There exist a possibility that we could end up playing five times. If they play well and we play well, it’s possible sectional, regional and state. Season is not even half way over for us. We got to take care of some things. Some of the people we were counting on didn’t play well. But again it’s a tough environment up here at their home floor and we’ll get back to work.”
