Wheeling Post 1 Defeats Romney, 7-3 in State Tournament Opener
Scores six runs in 2nd inning
KEYSER — Wheeling started the West Virginia legion state baseball tournament in impressive fashion. Post 1 scored six runs in the second inning en route to a 7-3 victory over Romney Thursday at Potomac State College.
Wheeling will face Morgantown at 9 a.m. today.
Eli Petho led the charge as he tallied three singles and secured one RBI while Dylan Gongola contributed with two hits and brought home a run.
Trevor Thomas plated a pair of runs with a double.
Jarrod Jones also had a double and one RBI.
Jon Milton secured a single and RBI.
Ryan Hummel was solid on the mound for Post 1 as he fired four strikeouts.
Romney was able to plate the first runs of the game as it took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Zack Whitacre had a pair of hits (single and double) and plated a run to lead the way for Post 91.
Brendan Whitacre supplied two RBI with a single while John Little had two singles.
Romney advanced in the state tournament after defeating South Charleston, 2-1 in an elimination game Thursday afternoon.
It will take on Berkeley County, today at 4 p.m.
