WHEELING — Playing in a tournament-type atmosphere, with a large and loud crowd, Linsly and Wheeling Central put early season unbeaten streaks on the line Thursday night in East Wheeling.

And while it wasn’t always as easy as the score indicates, the Cadets took advantage of Maroon Knights miscues and a huge night from their do-it-all stalwart Charlie Allison to remain spotless.

Allison dominated both at the net and from the back line, collecting 13 crushing kills, and Alyssa Thomas contributed 32 assists as Linsly swept three games from their city rivals, 25-11, 25-17, 25-22 on Coach “Skip” Prosser Court.

“Charlie is very consistent and very smart,” Cadets coach Ashlee Jividen said. “And the things she does are very key to our success. We have been playing very well, but it is still early and hopefully we can continue fighting through the season.”

With Linsly (3-0) leading, 3-2, early in the first game, the visitors used a 6-0 spurt, with Caitlin Lewis serving, to take control. Wheeling Central (2-1) was never able to get closer than those seven points the rest of the game.

Along the way the Cadets built a lead as large as 15 points at 23-8 before one of many unforced errors by the Maroon Knights helped give Linsly the final margin and a 1-0 lead.

The two teams took turns scoring early in Game 2, evenly dividing the initial 10 points. Wheeling Central was still within two points at 14-12 before Linsly finished on an 11-5 tear, with a pair of Allison kills sparking the run early on.

For the second straight game it was the hosts taking a 1-0 lead in Game 3 with the Maroon Knights even enjoying a four-point lead (13-9) at one point, their only multi-point advantage of the night.

Both teams played well through the mid-portion of the last game, with the score knotted at 19-19 late. Linsly had a slim 21-20 lead before scoring three consecutive points to pull to within match point. Central managed to score a pair of quick points before another unforced miscue gave the Cadets the final point they were in search of.

“One of our biggest focal points this year is ball control,” Jividen said. “If you can continually pass the ball well more often than not it leads to mistakes by the other team. We have been preaching it and it has really been paying off.

“And in order to continue to be successful good passing is going to need to be something we continue to do.”

Allison’s efforts did not go unnoticed by Central coach Delaney Denniston.

“We just started playing too late,” Denniston said. “It was late in the second game before we really got going and started playing. And I believe we got beat by one player.

“(Allison) she dominated in the front line and did a great job of attacking from the back also.

“I am very proud of my girls. They really put up a good fight, especially in the third game, but we have got to come out and start playing earlier.”

Emma Robinson contributed four aces for Linsly. Nicole Reasbeck had a fine night for Wheeling Central with seven kills, four assists and three aces while Tristen White chipped in with three kills and two blocks.
