PREP ROUNDUP: Wheeling Park Girls Claim First At Mohawk Invitational

MORGANTOWN — Strong swims by Abby Turner, Jenna Bopp and Lacie Langmyer propelled Wheeling Park’s girls swimmers to a first-place finish Saturday at the Mohawk Invitational.

The Patriot boys finished fifth following a disqualification in the opening event, the 200 medley relay.

The event, held at the new pool at Mylan Park, featured a number of the state’s top swim teams including Bridgeport, Parkersburg South, Parkersburg and Morgantown. In all, 18 teams participated including John Marshall and Wheeling Central.

JM’s boys finished seventh and the girls, eighth.

For the girls, Park’s Bopp captured first in the 100 breaststroke at 1:06.1 and second in the 200 individual medley (2:15.23). Turner was first in the 100 free (53.14) and second in the 50 free (24.45).

Langmyer was third in the 500 free (5:26.76) and fourth in the 200 free (2:02.79).

For John Marshall, Victoria Kidney, a freshman, captured two first-place finishes — the 200 IM (2:12.79) and the 100 yard back (59.68).

For the boys, Wheeling Park’s Devanand Kuttan won the 100 back in 59.37 and finished third in the 200 IM — 2:12.33. Isaac McCabe captured two second-place finishes — the 50 free (23.93) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.36).

St. C. Girls Secure

Second at Dover Invite

DOVER — Maggie Marody (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Casadie DieBetta (100 butterfly, 100 breastsroke) won two events to help St. Clairsville claim second at the Dover Invite.

The two were also on the 200 medlay relay team that broke the meet record with a time of 1:55.06 with Brenna Planey and Kylie McKeegan.

On the boys’ side, Martins Ferry’s Jarrett Bolinger won two events in the 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle.

Parkersburg South 52

PARKERSBURG — Wheeling Park hit 11 3-pointers as it defeated Parkersburg South. Lindsey Garrison led the way with 20 points off of five treys while Shanley Woods (four 3s) had 17. Bella Abernathy rounded out the double-figure for the Patriots with 11 points.

John Marshall 53

Beaver Local 50, OT

LISBON — Landyn Helms paced John Marshall with 20 points in a victory over Beaver Local. Anna Blake was also solid for the Monarchs with 14.

Jenna Riccardo had paced the Beavers with 17 points.

North Marion 61, Weir 52

WEIRTON — Sophia Mikula had 15 points while Isabella Aperfine had 10, but Weir fell to North Marion.

Martins Ferry 63, River 45

HANNIBAL — Maddie Ging had a game-high 18 points to lead Martins Ferry over River. Maria Clark and Shyla Schuster each had 12 points for the Purple Riders.

Alli Long finished with 13 points for the Pilots.


Barnesville Wins Rick Link Invite

MORRISTOWN — For the second time in three years, Barnesville has captured the team title at the Union Local Rick Link Invitational wrestling tournament.

Sophomores Griffen Stephen (113) and Carter Wells (120) won their respective weight classes for Barnesville.

Other local victories were Buckeye Local’s Brian Palmer Jr. (138) and Charles Smith (182); Union Local’s Brady Crum and Edison’s Hayden Johnson (145).
