Eight Park Wrestlers Earn Regional Titles

BUCKHANNON — With eight individual champions, Wheeling Park coasted to the West Virginia Class AAA, Region 1 wrestling tournament championship Saturday at Buckhannon Upshur High School.

The Patriots accumulated 259 points to easily outdistance University High, which had 202.5. Buckhannon Upshur was third at 144, six more than John Marshall.

Following a week off, the 73rd annual state tournament will be held Feb. 27-29 inside Big Sandy Super Store Arena in Huntington.

Winning titles for Wheeling Park were Quinton Velas (106), Cody Taggart (113), Nate Shelek (120), Andrew Shelek (138), Stevie Mitchell (145), Canon Welker (160), Erick Brothers (182) and Charlie Tamburin (220). Nate Shelek is a defending state champion.

The Patriots finished with a dozen state qualifiers when it was said and done, including Billy Gooch (152) and Garrett Parsons (195) who were runnerups.

The Monarchs will be sending a seven-member contingent to Huntington, led by runnerups Ethan Cook (106), Carl Cochran (113), Ethan Gray (120), Gabe Carman (132) and Dakoyta Thatcher (138).

Brooke has four state qualifiers. Max Camilletti (170) was second.

In Class A-AA in Fairmont, Oak Glen, with eight state qualifiers, edge past East Fairmont, 212-210.5, for the team title. Magnolia finished seventh with 82.5, with Weir (77) ninth and Cameron (74) 10th.

The Golden Bears were led by regional champions Jonathan Creese (145), Peyton Hall (152) and Kyler O’Connor (182). Clayton Lamb (120) was second. Hall will seeking a fourth state championship.

The Dragons, Blue Eagles and Red Riders will all have three individuals headed south, including Cameron’s Ian Bush (170) who was a regional titlist. Weir had runnerups in Wyatt Conley (138) and Jordan Brueck (285).

Madonna had one state qualifier while Wheeling Central had an alternate.
