Barnesville Graduate Seth Gordon Named PAC Player of Week

BARNESVILLE — Seth Gordon was swinging a hot bat during the course of the early portion of the Bethany College baseball season.

However, like basically all college baseball players across the country, Gordon is left to wonder what might have been throughout the rest of the season.

With Gordon, the 2017 Barnesville High School graduate, leading the way, the Bison completed a 5-3 spring break trip to Myrtle Beach last weekend, which also put finishing touches on their 2020 season because of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).

“It’s definitely sad for everyone involved,” Gordon said. “It’s especially sad for the seniors who don’t get to finish their senior, but I know some of them are actually planning to take advantage of the NCAA’s ruling to come back for their fifth year.”

The Bison baseball team got word of the expected shutdown and the NCAA canceling its spring sports tournaments just before it was taking the field for one of its final games during the trip.

“We tried to have fun and just play to make the most of it,” Gordon said of learning the season was probably going to end. ”

Gordon and his teammates moved out of their dorms after the trip to Myrtle and will begin online classes on Monday as their extended spring break wraps up.

“The PAC indefinitely suspended play, but we’re pretty sure that it’s not going to be resumed,” Gordon said.

Many of the Bison players are continuing to get their workouts in both in terms of weight lifting and baseball activities.

“We’re doing our stuff to be prepared just in case,” Gordon said.

If the season is, in fact, over, Gordon, who is a junior, finished on a high note. He was named the Presidents Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday after a trip in which he hit at an impressive .455 clip, which included 13 RBI and six runs scored. He also hit three home runs during the trip, including a grand slam.

“When we were coming back, my roommate told me he thought I would get that award,” Gordon said. “My coach sent me a message that it had came out and I did receive it. That’s how I saw it first. It’s just an awesome honor to receive.”

Gordon gives the credit for his turnaround this season to Bison head coach Justin Thomas.

“Coach Thomas helped me with an adjustment with my swing,” Gordon said. “I was upper cutting on the ball too much. He has me working on driving down through the ball now and it’s really helped a lot.”

Gordon also indicated he’s doing quite well on the academic side, too. He’s a finance major with a minor in spanish.
