West Liberty Set to Host Prep Shootout

WEST LIBERTY — It will be another busy summer for the West Liberty University women’s basketball team as its annual High School Team Shootout will be coming back to the ASRC.

“The shootout will run June 11-13. There are various team pricings for it. There are single days or multiple days. If you want to bring your team overnight, we’ve had teams do that in the past,” West Liberty women’s assistant basketball coach and camp director Cassie Seth said. “We can offer meals or teams can just come for one day.”

Along with head women’s basketball coach Kyle Cooper, Seth has seen the event grow over the few years as teams from West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania have made the trek up the Hilltop to prepare for the upcoming season.

It also gives the coaches a great opportunity what West Liberty as a whole has to offer.

“Last year we had 16 teams from three different states compete over the course of the three days,” Seth said. “That’s almost max capacity of what we can do. Thursday and Friday, we actually hit our max capacity number. It was good for us and we’re looking to build on that. It’s just a terrific opportunity to show off our program and our facilities, too.”

A handful of Ohio Valley Athletic Conference schools have competed in the shootout in the past, including Shadyside, John Marshall, Magnolia, Wheeling Park, Wheeling Central, Beaver Local and Morgantown.

Beaver Local’s Jenna Riccardo, will be on the West Liberty roster for the 2020-21 season. The summer before her senior year, she had the opportunity to play on the ASRC court with her high school teammates.

“It’s grown every single year and that’s been huge that we’ve been able to get more and more teams,” Seth said. “Especially during our team shootout, we have families come out and have fans in the stands that provides a pretty cool environment. But we get to showcase our campus and facilities. I think we have some top-notch ones, especially in the Valley and Tri-State area that some of these teams, players, parents and coaches don’t know about until they get up there. Just to get them to the top of the hill and to provide an experience is something that we look forward to doing.”

There are four camp options for teams including one day-no meals (three game guarantee, $250); one day-meals (3 games, $400); two days-no meals (six games, $425) and two days-two meals (six games, $600).

Certified officials and a West Liberty athletic trainer will be at all the games.

An overnight option is available with the two-day, with meals package at $45 per athlete which includes a dorm and meals. Coaches must stay on site (no additional cost) and assume all responsibilities of the team.

For any more information or any questions, please contact Cooper at Kyle.Cooper@westliberty.edu or (814)-490-5909.

The High School Shootout won’t be the only camp that will be offered this summer. From July 9-11, the West Liberty women’s basketball team will offer their individual skills camp for girls entering third through eighth grade.

“The individual camp has grown every year too,” Seth said. “First year we ran it, I think we had 50-60 girls, then we went up 60-70. We were at that number last year too, so we’re looking to build upon that.”

Costs for an overnight camper is $205 while commuter is $155.

One can register online at westlibertywomensbasketballcamps.com. Make checks payable to: West Liberty Women’s Basketball and return to ASRC CUB 103, 208 University Drive, West Liberty, WV 26074.

Campers must have proof of insurance, a recent physical and a signed medical released/picture authorization.

Further question can be brought to Seth at cassandra.seth@westliberty.edu or 304-336-8480.

On Aug. 1, the Hilltoppers will have a 3-on-3 shootout for any girl entering ninth through 12th grade.
