WOTC/Johnson Scholarships Are Awarded

Walkosky

The Wheeling Oglebay Tennis Club, in conjunction with the family of the late Patricia Wilhelm Johnston, has selected the recipients of the 2020 WOTC/Patricia Wilhelm Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded annually to a young man and woman who currently participate on their respective high school tennis teams, exhibit academic excellence, and participate actively in their communities. Each applicant must also submit an essay expressing the impact tennis has had on his/her life.

This year’s recipients are Jett Thomas of Wheeling Park High School and Nicole Walkosky of Indian Creek.

Thomas graduated WPHS with a 4.3 GPA. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the All-State Choir and Orchestra. He also represented WPHS at the Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine at St. John’s University, New York. He was also an ambassador for the Hugh O’Bryan Youth Leadership Program. Jett has volunteered at the Open Door Soup Kitchen and the St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church. He has worked as a youth tennis instructor and currently is employed at Wendy’s.

Jett plans to attend West Virginia University in the fall where he will pursue a career in dentistry. He is the son of JT and Tara Thomas.

Walkosky earned a 4.9 GPA at Indian Creek. She was active in student council, National Honor Society, Key Club, and the yearbook staff. She has volunteered at the Jefferson County Humane Society, the Schiappa Library and was an elementary S.T.A.R.T. room mentor.

Nicole has been accepted to the Ohio State University where she will pursue a degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences. She is the daughter of Michael Walkosky and Sharon Walkosky.

This scholarship was established in 2018 by the WOTC and the family of Patricia Wilhelm Johnston, who passed away in 2016. Mrs. Johnston, though not a tennis player herself, recognized the value of physical activity throughout life. For this reason, her daughters, the youngest of which is actively involved in USTA tennis play, partnered with the WOTC to establish this scholarship. Information on the 2021 scholarship can be obtained on the WOTC website.
