Oak Glen Sweeps Madonna

WEIRTON — The Oak Glen volleyball team is not where it expected to be at this point in its season.

But, as long as they get to defend its state championship, everything will work out just fine. Tuesday night’s sweep at Madonna just may be what the Golden Bears (7-9) need to turn things up a notch.

“We don’t ever talk about the state championship, but you can definitely tell with getting down to the last month, you can tell that our intensity and energy have kicked up,” Oak Glen coach Morgan Poling said. “We’ve had some ups and downs this season, some injuries here and there. But, we’re starting to come together one day at a time.

“Our team chemistry definitely has improved. We have been playing more for each other rather than ourselves. I think that really showed (Tuesday). Our serving game and receiving serves definitely has increased. That’s one of our strong points.”

Poling also mentioned that the Golden Bears beefed up their schedule this season for better competition.

Oak Glen was dominant from start to end Tuesday evening, sweeping the Blue Dons (4-5), 25-10, 25-14, 25-15.

“I think (Tuesday) taught us a lot because Oak Glen is a really good team,” Madonna head coach Theresa Moore said. “I think it helped us to step up our game a little bit. There are new things we figured out that we have to work on, so I think today was a good lesson overall.”

Those mistakes Moore mentioned include blocking and defending cross hits.

Alayna Kranis paced Oak Glen with 13 kills. Gracie Wright produced 24 assists and five aces.

“We talk a lot in the gym about getting everyone involved. Our middles definitely have stepped up,” Poling said. “One of our freshmen, Ashlyn Six, has greatly stepped up for us. She’s made a huge impact for being so young. It’s a full team effort, and it definitely shows.”

For the Blue Dons, Landry Bone tallied eight kills, Maddi Daugherty 10 digs and Morgan Owens eight assists.

“We’ve had some ups and downs emotionally. If we can pull ourselves together emotionally and mentally, we have what it takes physically, we just have to come together and piece everything together,” Moore said.
