Ritz Named MEC Player of Week
BRIDGEPORT — Wheeling University junior forward Lilly Ritz has been named the Mountain East Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Cardinals to a pair of victories last week.
Ritz had a pair of double-doubles and averaged 20.0 points and 21.0 rebounds as Wheeling picked up wins over Frostburg State and Fairmont State. In the win over the Bobcats, she had 18 points, 17 rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
Against the Falcons, Ritz had the fifth 20/20 game of her career with 22 points and 25 rebounds. She also blocked four more shots and had three steals. Her 25-rebound effort was the third-highest single-game total in her career.
Ritz has recorded a double-double in each game this season and is averaging 21.3 points and 16.8 rebounds per game through four contests.
The honor is the third of Ritz’s career. She earned the nod twice during February last season.
Wheeling, which earlier today debuted at No. 5 in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region, will travel to North Central West Virginia for a road matchup with MEC preseason-favorite Glenville State on Wednesday, January 20 at 5 p.m.
Cardinals fall at Notre Dame, 75-69
WHEELING — The Wheeling University men’s basketball team was defeated by Notre Dame Monday evening inside the Murphy Gymnasium.
The Cardinals drop to 0-3 on the season, while the Falcons improve to 1-4 overall.
Senior guard Jordan Reid was one shy of his career-high with a game-high 26 points. Senior guard Jarett Haines finished with 14 points and a team-high six rebounds, while sophomore forward John Korte added 10 points.
There was little separating the two teams through the first eight minutes. The Cardinals were trailing 15-13 when they went on a 17-4 run, including 12-straight points, to open up their biggest lead of the evening at 30-19 with 6:39 to play in the first half.
Wheeling maintained the lead all the up to the final minute of the opening period. The Cardinals led 33-25 with just under five minutes on the clock, before the Falcons closed the half on an 11-3 run to knot the game up at 36-36 at halftime.
Notre Dame maintained momentum entering the second half, but the Cardinals had an answer. The Falcons led 50-44 with just under 12 minutes left in the game. Wheeling responded with its second 12-point run of the evening to take a 56-50 lead with 9:13 to play in the game.
The Cardinals held a 61-58 advantage with five minutes remaining on the clock. Notre Dame went on to out-score Wheeling 17-to-8 down the stretch to pull away and seal the Cardinals’ third loss this season.
The Cardinals were dominated on the glass by Notre Dame. The Falcons finished with a 44 to 27 rebound advantage. Wheeling was limited to just three offensive rebounds on the night.
A combined 44 fouls were called on both teams. Wheeling only managed to convert 18 of 26 at the free-throw line, compared to the 10 of 13 performance by the Falcons.
The contest saw 12 tie scores and the lead changed hands eight times.
West Liberty, Notre Dame Match Postponed
BRIDGEPORT — Due to the impact of COVID-19 protocols, Tuesday’s MEC wrestling dual of West Liberty at Notre Dame College has been postponed.
The match will be considered for potential rescheduling at a later time.
Coach Danny Irwin’s No. 5-ranked Hilltoppers are now set to return to the mats on Saturday when they join No. 12 Notre Dame, defending MEC champion UNC-Pembroke and host Davis & Elkins in a highly-anticipated MEC quadrangular.
