West Lib Earns 12th Straight Postseason Bid
Toppers to face Malone Saturday
The West Liberty University men’s basketball team has earned a 12th straight NCAA Division II tournament bid. The Hilltoppers (15-4) were slotted in at the No. 3 seed of the Atlantic Region and will take on sixth-seeded Malone University Saturday at the ASRC. Earlier in the year, the NCAA announced pre-determined sites for all the regional tournaments. West Liberty was chosen to host the Atlantic Region.
The Pioneers (17-6) earned an automatic bid after claiming the Great Midwest Tournament championship where they defeated Cedarville University, 77-59.
Malone started the season 0-4, but won 17 of their next 19 games.
In the G-MAC tournament, the Pioneers defeated Walsh University in the quarterfinals and Hillsdale College in a semifinal matchup.
Hillsdale (20-2) earned the top seed in the Atlantic Region while Charleston (14-3) is locked in at the No. 2 seed. Both teams have earned byes.
In the other quarterfinal matchup, No. 4 seed Mercyhurst, who finished the regular season with an 11-0 record, will take on Mountain East Conference champion Fairmont State (15-4), which is the fifth seed.
The Falcons defeated both the Golden Eagles (semifinal) and Hilltoppers (championship) in the MEC Tournament to earn their automatic bid.
The quarterfinal games are slated for Saturday while the semifinal games are Sunday. The Atlantic Region championship game is scheduled for Tuesday with a spot in the Elite Eight on the line.
Charleston awaits the winner of the West Liberty-Malone game while Hillsdale will take on the Fairmont State-Mercyhurst winner.
Starting times for the games will be announced later this week.
