West Liberty to Host Wheeling on Saturday

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va — The Mountain East Conference on Monday announced several adjustments to the upcoming spring football schedule which will impact the West Liberty and Wheeling University football game.

The league was forced to make the changes to the remaining schedule for the MEC’s North Division squads following Fairmont State’s decision to opt out of the season due to COVID-19 protocols.

As a result, the remaining five teams in the North Division are now scheduled to complete a four-game, round-robin schedule.

The Hilltoppers will now host Wheeling on Saturday with Notre Dame (Ohio) traveling to Alderson Broaddus. Both games are set for 6 p.m. kickoffs.

Both the Hilltoppers and the Cardinals were last in in action against Alderson Broaddus with both pulling off similar victories.

WLU was victorious 38-6 and Wheeling won 34-6.

Quarterback Jamie Diven paced the Toppers with 131 yards passing on 11 of 16 and two touchdowns.

Quincy Wimbish led the rushing attack with 18 carries for 135 yards and a score.

Wisdom Jenkins was the top target with four grabs for 79 yards, while Tariq Glenn and Kyle Ritz both hauled in touchdown grabs.

On the other side, Wheeling was led by quarterback Jalen Lea, who completed 11 of his 20 throws for 163 yards and two touchdowns, while also throwing three interceptions.

Wheeling’s rushing game was impressive with Sy Alli leading the way behind the O-line.

Alli garnered 61 yards and a touchdown on 20 rushes, while teammate Eli Young picked up 50 yards on four carries.

Jake Keenan was big in the passing game as he collected 92 yards and a touchdown on his four catches.

Wide receiver Jaquaun Davidson also had a touchdown reception in the Cardinals’ victory.

Both the Cardinals and the Hilltoppers come into the game carrying a 1-1 record.

West Liberty will now have an open date on April 10 when Alderson Broaddus is scheduled to travel to Frostburg State while Wheeling hosts Notre Dame (Ohio).

The Hilltoppers are scheduled to complete the abbreviated regular season on April 17 at home against Frostburg State.

The MEC championship game between the North and South Division champions has been scheduled for the following week.
