Black Bears Beat Scrappers With Eighth-Inning Grand Slam

GRANVILLE – The West Virginia Black Bears won 7-6 against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Friday evening at Monongalia County Ballpark. Facing a 4-3 deficit heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, a grand slam from Grant Hussey propelled West Virginia over Mahoning Valley for their 11th win against the Scrappers this season.

The Black Bears fell behind early after the Scrappers hit a home run in the first inning and scored three more runs in the second. West Virginia failed to get a hit until the fourth inning when 3B Grant Hussey and RF Andrew Miller hit back-to-back singles to break the hitless streak.

The Black Bears cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fifth inning on several walks and passed balls. After walking SS Jake Reinhardt, a single from C Luis Navarro advanced Reinhardt to third with one out. Two more Black Bears batters made their way to first on balls to plate Reinhardt and give them their first run of the night. With bases still loaded, DH Kevin Dowdell advanced to first base on a passed ball that scored Navarro. The Bears added one more run off a RBI walk when Miller scored, and West Virginia finished the fifth inning down by one.

A late push from the Black Bears in the eighth inning gave them a 7-4 lead. With the bases loaded, 3B Grant Hussey launched a home run that breached the left field wall behind the visiting bullpen for a grand slam. The four-run homer was the Parkersburg, W.Va., native’s seventh home run of the season and the second Black Bears’ grand slam at Monongalia County Ballpark. Hussey finished the night going 2-for-3 with four RBI and a home run.

Mahoning Valley was held scoreless from the second inning until the ninth. Though they were able to tag on two additional runs in the ninth inning, reliever Shandon Herrera closed out the top of the ninth to finish the game.

In his second appearance for the Black Bears, Daniel Killingsworth came onto the mound for the Black Bears in the fifth inning and dominated the Scrappers in three innings pitched. The California native threw a season-high six strikeouts while allowing only two hits.

West Virginia returns to face Mahoning Valley in game two of the three game series on Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. for superhero night at Monongalia County Ballpark.
