Wheeling Post 1 Stays Alive
WHEELING — Much like he did during the regular high school baseball season, Ben Foster took the mound on Wednesday with his team’s season on the line and he tossed a dandy.
Foster struck out four in a complete game effort as Wheeling Post 1 defeated Wellsburg 10-1 in an elimination game of the Area One Tournament at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Complex.
Post 1 fell to Parkersburg Post 15 by a 4-0 score in the first game of the day and the two will have a rematch on Thursday at I-470 — if Parkersburg wins, it advances to state as Area One champs.
If Wheeling wins, the two will play a winner-take-all battle on Friday.
Foster delivered a total of 18 first-pitch strikes in his victory.
Jared Marsh paced the Post 1 offense in its win with three hits and two RBI, while Nick Fencl was explosive with the bat as he drove in three runs.
Tanner Music and Andrew Geottel each supplied a pair of hits for Wellsburg, while teammate Isaac Lippoli plated the lone run.
In the loss to Parkersburg, Marsh, again, swung the hot bat with two hits.
Chris Vargo struck out three in five-plus innings.
