Cardinals Travel To Frostburg

Wheeling University and Frostburg State are meeting for the third time. Frostburg State has won both matchups. The two played last spring with the Bobcats edging the Cardinals, 27-20. Wheeling saw it’s three-game winning streak snapped last week against UNC Pembroke The Cardinals turned the ball over five times against the Braves. WU’s 17 turnovers lost this season are the second-most in NCAA Division II. Wheeling did throw for a season-high 338 yards against UNCP.Wheeling is 2-1 this year when rushing for over 100 yards in a game. Frostburg State suffered its first loss last week against #14 Notre Dame. FSU was held to a season-low 76 yards rushing last week. The Bobcats have not forced a turnover in either of the last two games. Frostburg State has scored points in nine of its last 10 trips in the red zone.

Concord at Charleston

Charleston has won the last five matchups between the two schools. Concord’s last win came back in 2014. Saturday’s game pits one of the top passing teams in the country against one of the best against the pass.

CU’s Jack Mangel is averaging 329 yards through the air per game. His top target, Tywan Pearce, is among the national leaders in receptions (43), receiving yards (755) and all-purpose yards (906). Pearce is also among the active career leaders in receptions (192), receptions per game (5.19) and all-purpose yards (4,405). Charleston is second in the country in passing efficiency defense (73.23). The Golden Eagles are allowing just 127.6 yards through the air per game. Kei Beckham is among the national leaders in passes defended (2.0/g).

Glenville State at Alderson Broaddus

The two rivals meet for the first time as conference foes on the gridiron on Saturday. The two played non-conference games from 2015-2019. Glenville State holds a 3-2 edge in the series. Neither team has consecutive wins in the series. GSC won the last time the two teams played in 2019. Glenville State has been flagged for the fewest penalties in the conference this year. GSC’s red zone defense is among the best in the country (13th) allowing scores on just 60 percent of the oppositions’s red zone trips. Brandon Penn leads the country in interceptions per game (1.0). The Battlers have struggled offensively this year scoring fewer than 10 points in four of six games. Jaylen McNair produces 119.6 yards of total offense per game for AB.

W.Va. Wesleyan at Notre Dame

Notre Dame is 6-1 against West Virignia Wesleyan in Mountain East Conference play. WVWC’s win in the series came back in 2017, a 20-13 win over the Falcons. Notre Dame has held WVWC to just six points combined in the last two matchups. Notre Dame knocked off #24 Frostburg State last week despite being held to its lowest point total of the season. The win keeps NDC in the hunt for a conference title. NDC ran the ball a season-high 46 times last week against Frostburg State. after scoring 25 points against Concord in week two, WVWC has scored just three points total in its last three games. WVWC has had more time of possession than its opponent in each the last two weeks.

UNC Pembroke at W.Va. State

UNC Pembroke is 3-0 against West Virginia State. The two teams met in the spring with the Braves winning 48-21. Saturday’s game marks the first at the renovated Lakin-Ray Field. The renovations include artificial turf and lights … UNCP snapped a two-game losing streak last week with a home win over Wheeling. The Braves had four interceptions. UNCP has yet to run for over 100 yards in a game this year. QB Josh Jones has nine TD passes compared to just two interceptions for the Braves. WVSU has not turned the ball over in either of the last two games (both wins). The Yellow Jacket defense has surrendered just 16 points in the last two games. WVSU’s Malik Newton is fourth in the league in rushing with 535 yards (89.2 ypg). Donovan Riddick has accounted for 11 touchdowns this year — third-most in the MEC.
