St. CLAIRSVILLE — The Red Devils volleyball team defeated visiting Brooke in straight sets Wednesday night; 25-19, 25-17, 25-22.
Lydia Wees had nine kills, three digs and two blocks. Chloe Biancarelli added seven kills with four aces and four digs.
California (Pa.) 2, West Liberty 1
CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The West Liberty University men’s soccer team closed out its non-conference schedule Wednesday with a 2-1 loss to California (Pa.) at the Philipsburg Soccer Complex.
Coach Sean Regan’s Hilltoppers (4-8-0) found themselves in an early hole after the host Vulcans (2-7-2) got a goal from Evan Blunkosky a little more than two minutes after the opening kickoff.
Daniel Rovira ripped an equalizing blast through traffic into the top right corner off an assist from Daniel Rovira to knot the score at 1-1 in the 57th minute but the Hilltoppers couldn’t hang on.
A hustling Blunkosky delivered the game-winning score for the Vulcans, sliding into the box to knock it past the WLU keeper in the 68th minute.
West Liberty 2, W. Va. State 1
WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women’s soccer team continued its recent surge Wednesday with an impressive 2-1 victory against Mountain East Conference South Division power West Virginia State at the West Family Athletic Complex.
Rileigh Gualtiere finished off a brilliant cross from Kaelyn Oskin in the 55th minute to snap a 1-1 deadlock and a well-organized defensive effort made it stand up for Coach Barry Christmas’ host Hilltoppers (6-3-2, 5-2-2) as they strengthened their hold on second place in the MEC North Division standings.
The WLU defense and goalkeeper Olivia Montgomery closed out the win, turning aside several sustained Yellow Jacket attacks to keep the visitors off the board the rest of the way. Montgomery made six saves in net to earn the win.
