Big Red Gets Win in Home Opener

STEUBENVILLE — The Big Red boys basketball team made its first contest inside the Crimson Center this season a successful one.

Coach Mike Haney’s group, led by 11 points each from Ty Pierce and Brenton Jones, topped John Marshall Tuesday night inside the home gym, 51-38.

Jones also pulled down a team-high six rebounds, while Ivan Buggs netted 10 points and pulled down five boards.

Frankie Vostatek netted seven points, while Kyjhuan Hopkins and Phaeton Hill even divided 10 points. Hill dished two assists.

Grant Neiswonger led the Monarchs with 10 points, while Roman Gray added eight.

Up next for Steubenville is the first round of the City Championship as Catholic Central comes to the Crimson Center on Friday.

Buckhannon-Upshur 61, Wheeling Park 57

BUCKHANNON — Cole Wilkinson scored 21 points, but it was not enough as the Patriots fell on the road Tuesday. Brett Phillips finished second on the team with 13.

Lamar Hurst led B-U with a game-high 22 points.


Brooke Sweeps Tri-Meet

WELLSBURG — The Bruins swept a tri-match against Beaver Local and University with the girls post 91 points and the boys 92.

The Brooke girls got event wins from Hayli Yost (200 IM), Veronica Mann (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Ella McCullough (100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke), Lyla Horvath (100 backstroke) and 400 freestyle relay (Haeley Shaffer, Horvath, McCullough, Mann).

The boys picked up wins from Jacob Donley (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle), Nick Barney (100 freestyle), Enion Cumani (100 breaststroke), 200 medley relay (Donley, Cumani, Thomas Olenick, Barney) and 400 freestyle relay (Barney, Olenick, Cumani, Donley).



Bethany 65, Juaniata 55

BETHANY — The Bison (6-1) kept up their winning ways with three players scoring in double-digits.

Makenzee Mason (16) and Lindsey Garrison (13) led the starters while Courtney Walker came in off the bench to score a team-high 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

Taylor Stinnett pulled down a dozen boards while Garrison and Walker both drained three treys.
