Brooke Takes Care of Linsly

WHEELING — After a season-opening loss at Weir, Brooke’s softball team was looking for a confidence booster.

The Bruins got just that on Monday as they rolled to a 15-3 victory over Linsly at Holloway Field.

Landry Bone belted a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and pitcher Alexa Foresha struck out six in six innings for the Bruins, who bounced back nicely.

“I think we needed a confidence builder,” Brooke coach Jim DiCarlo said. “Linsly is a quality team so it was nice to get out to a lead. Then, they battled back but we were able to get out of the inning and then we put together another big inning right away. Landry hit a home run Saturday, she hit a home run on Friday in our scrimmage and she is just really seeing the ball well. I was really happy with how we hit the ball and I thought Lex did a good job pitching.”

Brooke led 3-0 after the first but Linsly cut the deficit to 3-2 in the second thanks to a pair of Bruins’ errors.

The Bruins took out their frustration at the plate with eight runs in the third and a plethora of hard-hit balls that forced Linsly fielding and throwing errors in the frame.

Madison Brown was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the inning to bring in a run and Wyntar McQuistan recorded a two-run single to put the finishing touches on the outburst.

“They put a lot of pressure on you with their bunting and their speed,” DiCarlo said of Linsly. “I thought our kids handled that adversity really well. It’s still a young season and we’re a young team with only one senior but I really thought we hit the ball well, (Monday).”

Brooke Edge got things going for the Cadets in the bottom of the third with a hit and she came around to score on an error but, once again, the Bruins answered.

This time it was Kameryn Eckels who singled and scored on a RBI knock off the bat of Angelina Lippoli to give her team a 12-3 cushion.

Brooke added three more in the fifth as Eckels delivered a RBI single and Hailey Moore singled to plate the final two runs of the contest.

Emilee Knorr tallied two hits in the victory.

On the other side, Linsly suffered from eight total errors and 11 walks.

“You have to be able to throw, you have to be able to catch and pitchers have to be able to throw strikes,” Linsly coach Paul Recrosio said. “I’d love to tell you we haven’t had enough time to work on throwing or defense but we have. There are no excuses. Kids have to learn to put mistakes behind them when they get to the plate. They have to overcome themselves.

“We did have some good at-bats but we just couldn’t put anything together. It’s the first game so there is nowhere to go but up.”
