Central’s Reasbeck Named All-State in Class AAA
Seven of the eight Class AAA first-team selections guided their respective teams to the big dance inside the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center, including Wheeling Central senior Ryan Reasbeck.
Reasbeck was a first-team selection for the second consecutive season, averaging 21.4 points per game this year while leading Central to a 20-3 record.
Reasbeck scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished five assists and compiled four blocks in the come-from-behind quarterfinal win over Grafton. He also scored 18 points against Shady Spring in the semis.
Fairmont Senior has dealt with its fair share of heartache on the final Saturday of the boys high school basketball season.
Prior to the induction of the four-class system, the Polar Bears played in six of the previous seven Class AA championship games from 2013-19.
Although Fairmont Senior won back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017, in the other four games the Polar Bears weren’t as fortunate.
Now playing in Class AAA under the new classification system, few people outside of Marion County gave Fairmont a chance to hoist the championship trophy this season.
Sophomore guard Zycheus Dobbs helped the Polar Bears pull off what many thought to be the unthinkable.
Battling defending AAA state champion Shady Spring, Dobbs rolled in a floater as time expired for a thrilling 60-59 win. The game winner came after the Tigers had erased a seven-point deficit with 2:42 to play.
Braden Chapman’s layup with 11 seconds remaining had given the Tigers their first lead of the fourth quarter.
“We were fortunate, honored and made one more play than them,” Fairmont head coach David Retton said after the game. “The players make plays.”
Those were the type of plays that all-state players make.
So, it should come as no surprise that Chapman and Dobbs both were AAA first-team all-state selections as voted on by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.
Chapman, the unquestioned leader of a Shady Spring team that compiled a 23-1 regular season record, was named the first-team captain. The junior standout averaged 15.5 points per game and was stellar in his three state tournament games averaging almost 22 points.
“Braden is everything in a competitor that you wish you could instill in all your players. He is just a fierce competitor,” Shady Spring head coach Ronnie Olson said. “He was just a junior this year, but he played like a senior with the way his game has developed. He has it all. ”
In the championship game, Chapman scored 17 points, grabbed seven rebounds, handed out six assists and had five steals.
Dobbs averaged 14.6 points in the regular season and was remarkably consistent in the state tournament scoring 15 points twice and 16 in the semifinal win over Scott.
He too filled up the stat sheet in the championship tilt with eight assists, five rebounds and six blocks, to go with his 15 points.
Braden’s twin brother Cole Chapman also received a first-team nod after averaging 14.3 points during the season. Cole scored 18 points in the semifinal win over Wheeling Central.
“Cole just goes about his business and he is a Steady Eddie. Any night he can give you a triple-double and on defense he locks up the best players,” Olson said. “It doesn’t matter if you are bigger and stronger, he is so smart and will find a way to get around you. Cole rarely has a down night and is so consistent. He always comes to play.”
Grafton senior Ryan Maier averaged over 21 points per game leading the Bearcats to the state tournament to secure his first-team honor. Mair had 21 points, six assists and five rebounds in the quarterfinal game against Wheeling Central.
Prior to Dobbs’ heroics, the biggest shot of the state tournament came from Scott junior Reece Carden. The sharpshooter hit a buzzer beater against rival Logan to stun the Wildcats in the quarterfinal matchup.
Carden averaged 21.6 points per game during the season and is joined on the first team by Logan’s junior standout Scotty Browning and Notre Dame senior guard Jaidyn West.
West averaged 24 points, six assists and five rebounds per night, while Browning averaged 15.2 and was no stranger to late game heroics for the Wildcats, hitting the game winner against Nitro in the regional co-final.
Gavin Barkley from Berkeley Springs was named the second-team captain and was joined by Herbert Hoover standout Devin Hatfield.
DeSean Goode, who scored 31 points in the semifinal win for Fairmont over Scott, was a second-team selection along with Jaedan Holstein from Shady Spring and Garrett Williamson from Logan.
Cory Harper from Elkins earned a second-team nod as did Luke Johnson from Ripley and Colby Pishner from Nicholas County.
