JM’s Blake Hits 2 Grand Slams In One Game

GLEN DALE — Some players dream of hitting a grand slam.

It is one of the most exhilarating plays in the sport of softball after all.

Now, imagine hitting two grand slams… In one game!

John Marshall’s Ava Blake knows that feeling after accomplishing the feat on Saturday in a dominating 14-0 triumph over Buckhannon-Upshur.

After earning a single in her first at-bat, the sophomore really broke out of an early season slump in the third inning as she sent a pitch sailing over the outfield wall with the bases juiced.

Then, just one inning later, Blake returned to the dish and pulverized her second grand slam in as many innings.

“I’m still speechless,” Blake said. “I’ve been in a slump and I couldn’t get out of my own head. I just didn’t feel like I was hitting as well as I did last season so I just kind of let everything go in the world and it really felt good.”

Before both at-bats with the bases loaded, Blake was not concerned about trying to put the ball over the fence. She simply wanted to keep the line moving with a hit and pass the baton to her teammates.

“I was not trying to hit for power at all,” Blake said.

“I said prior to my first grand slam that I was just trying to hit a line drive because we needed to score some runs. That was my mentality but there was a pitch right down the middle and I swung with all my might and it happened to go over the fence.”

Moments later, it seemed like deja vu for the JM shortstop.

“The second time it was the same thing,” she said. “I was like, ‘Here we go again.’ We needed to get runs and I wanted to do anything to get on base but the pitch was down the middle, I swung with all my might and it went over the fence again.”

As exciting as it was for Blake, her teammates’ reaction meant the world to her.

“My teammates were going crazy,” Blake said. “This is one of the most energetic groups I’ve ever encountered and we all have so much love for each other.”

As far as the future is concerned, Blake believes a win like this gives herself and her teammates confidence moving forward.

“This gives me a lot more confidence moving forward,” Blake said. “I can’t stress enough the support from not only my family who are my biggest supporters, but from my teammates. They’ve always had my back no matter what my game has looked like. Our coaches, I’m a little biased, but I think they are the best in the state. They are a group of guys who care. They help you get better so when moments like this come, you can accomplish these types of things. They help us realize that if you do the fundamentals right, good things will happen.”
