Field is Set For OVAC Track Meet

Event slated for Saturday at Red Devil Stadium

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The field is set for the OVAC Cal Griffin Track Championship at Red Devil Stadium on Saturday.

The class 1A-3A qualifying meet wrapped in St. Clairsville on Wednesday, picking up after a thunderstorm forced a suspension of competition on Tuesday.

No team had a better meet than Shadyside in the 1A/2A division as the Tigers finished with 12 top-qualifiers split between their boys and girls squads.

Senior Paige Gorby led the girls’ team with two individual top finishes in the long jump (16-6) and 100 (13.52) and was on the winning 4×100 relay team (53.70) along with Mia Boatman, Heather Good and Kierstyn Elerick. Kenzy Beckett rounded out the Tigers with a win in the 3200 (12:20.72).

On the boys’ side, Shadyside led Class 1A/2A with eight top-qualifiers.

Senior Mason VanNest topped three events, individually in the 100 (11.05) and 200 (22.48) and as a part of the 4×400 relay team (3:36.97). Competing with VanNest were Wyatt Reiman, Jayden Carmichael and Kopper Chimley.

Reiman also won the high jump (5-6) while Andrew Osman took the pole vault (13-6), Nathan Booth won the 110 hurdles (16.12) and Chimley won the 400 (52.26).

Shadyside’s quartet of Landen Salgat, Jacob James, Lee McKitrick and Holden Slaget won the 4×800 with a time of 9:02.33.

Also in Class 1A/2A for the boys, Wheeling Central and Toronto both had a pair of top-qualifiers.

The Maroon Knights won the 4×100 (45.29) and 4×200 (1:35.64) relays with the team of Rylie Watkins, Braden McWreath, Lorenzo Ferrera and Cooper Blair for both.

Toronto’s Josh Fancher won both throwing events, winning the dicus by over 30 with with a throw of 163-8 and topping shot put leaderboard by over 12 feet with a toss of 57-1 1/4.

Paden City’s team of Jasup Spragg, Julian Landauer, Logan Smith and Shane Anderson won the 4×110 shuttle hurdle relay (1:03.33).

Triston Bates from Valley was the top-qualifier in the long jump with a leap of 19-10.75.

Finally, George Harris from Steubenville Catholic Central took the top spot in the 300 hurdles (43.17).

Class 3A

Linsly’s boys led in Class 3A with six event wins, edging out Bellaire, which had five.

Jyleik Johnson led the way with three event wins in the 100 (11.19), 200 (23.80) and 4×100 relay (45.47). Also on the relay team were Malte Feil, Colby Gibbons and Atley Cowan.

Cowan also ran the first leg of the winning 4×200 relay team (1:33.78) which included Santiago Graneros, Feil and Felix Reitter.

Reitter individually won the 400 with a time of 53.50.

Linsly’s George Donovic finished in a three-way tie for first in the high jump (5-6), along with Magnolia’s Austin Beverlin and Buckeye Trail’s Charlie Parry.

Beverline also won the long jump (19-10) for the Blue Eagles.

Bellaire’s Colt Sechrest had a huge showing, breaking the OVAC meet and Class 3A record with the discus with a throw of 182-4, more than 40 feet further than second place. He also doubled as the shot put winner with a throw of 52-4 3/4.

Teammate Mayson Sochor won the 110 hurdles (15.19) and the 300 hurdles (42.37) and ran the first leg on the winning huttle hurdle team (1:05.95) that included Khalil Kimbro, Maurice Webb and Nico Piergallini.

Martins Ferry claimed three event wins in the pole vault (Carter Bennett, 10-0), 800 (Francis Toohey, 2:03.47) and 4×800 (8:49.05). That relay team was made up of Trent Lewis, Ryan Theaker, Dominick Shrodes and Toohey.

Barnesville’s Tyler Jenkins won the 3200 (10:04.26) and the team of Robby Nixon, Vincent Phillips, Logan Dodd and Connor Warrington won the 4×400 relay (3:38.76).

Girls

Class 1A/2A

Shadyside’s girls tied with Caldwell and Steubenville Catholic Central with four event wins each.

Clara Symington had a hand in all four of the Crusaders’ wins, individually topping the 100 hurdles (15.97) and 300 hurdles (46.66) and being a part of the winning 4×400 and 4×200 relay teams.

Joining Symington on the 4×200 team were Theresa Kerker, Rebecca Bolster and Katheryn Bolster. Elizabeth Schiesing replaced Rebecca Bolster on the 4×400 team.

Paden City won the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1:13.20. On that team were Marie Schramm, Mady Still, Brandis Dalrymple and Hallie McDonald.

Madonna’s Kristina Lesho was the top-qualifier in the 1600 with a time of 5:38.98.

Class 3A

The Fort Frye girls led Class 3A with eight top-qualifiers. Behind the Cadets was Barnesville with four.

Anna Yeater led the Shamrocks with wins in the discus (118-10) and shot put (40-10) while Hallie Markovich won the 100 hurdles (18.37) and Marah Bethel won the 800 (2:33.02).

Magnolia’s Jaci Rohde won the long jump with a leap of 16-4 1/2 and teammate Jenna Blain won the 300 hurdles in 50.06.

The Blue Eagles also claimed victory in the 4×100 shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1:15.06. Running for the Blue Eagles were Kaylee Williams, Emma Spitzer, Shaela Holliday and Blain.

Linsly’s quartet of Danyelle Dunlevy, Caitlin Lweis, Sol Marcera and Haylen Cook won the 4×200 relay in 1:54.38.

Finally, Buckeye Local’s Rylee Glover was the top-qualifier in the 200 with a time of 27.10.

The OVAC Cal Griffin Track Championship will kick off from Red Devils Stadium Saturday morning with the field events starting at 10 a.m. and the track events scheduled to begin at noon.
