WHEELING — Parkersburg Post 15 earned a 2-for-1 Wednesday’s Area One Tournament game at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Complex.

Not only did Parkersburg post a 10-0 shutout victory over Moundsville Post 3, but it also saved pitching.

Post 15 pitchers held Post 3 to one hit and four walks, while its defense played flawlessly in the field.

“Pitching is everything in these kinds of tournaments,” Parkersburg manager Mike Goodwin said. “We were able to limit our starter to less than 45 pitches, then we brought in two more kids to eat up innings and give them some work and we won — mission accomplished.”

Dylan Holliday was perfect through three innings and tallied four strikeouts while sitting the first nine hitters down in order.

Next up was Josh Gribble, who tossed a scoreless inning with a pair of walks and no hits allowed.

Evan Swain finished the game for Parkersburg.

“I am proud of our guys,” Moundsville skipper Tim Koontz said. “We kept fighting until the end. It was a huge win (Tuesday) to get into the winner’s bracket and we played really well on (Tuesday). We’re still pretty young so this game was a great experience for them and we’re going to get better.”

Post 15 also plated at-least two runs in every inning it came to the plate with two in the first, third and fourth frames and a four-run outburst in the second stanza.

“We scored in every inning and put pressure on them every inning,” Goodwin said. “That to me was the key and it made it easier on our pitching.”

Bentley Kinzer supplied a RBI knock and Drew Woofter added a RBI double in the first before four hits, two walks and two Moundsville errors opened up the big second frame to give Post 15 a 6-0 cushion.

A trio of free passes and a RBI knock by Nic Menarchek in the third gave Post 15 an 8-0 advantage and a bases-loaded walk by Holliday and a sac-fly by Carter King provided a 10-0 lead after four.

Moundsville was down to its last out before it recorded its first hit, a single off the bat of Tyler Stauffer.

Wheeling and Parkersburg will face off today at 5 p.m. in the winner’s bracket.

“It’s going to be a dog fight,” Goodwin said. “We have a lot of respect for Wheeling and it’s going to come down to pitching and who gets the biggest hits.”

Moundsville drops to the loser’s bracket to face Follansbee today at 7:30 p.m.

“We threw several pitchers (Wednesday) to save pitchers,” Koontz said. “Hopefully we can get a win (today).”
