Blue Dons Score Twice Late to Down Edison
RICHMOND — Madonna finished. Edison didn’t. That was the difference in the match.
The Blue Dons netted two goals in the second half to gain separation from the Wildcats en route to a 3-0 victory Monday night at the Edison Unified Sports Complex.
“The girls did really well,” first-year Madonna (2-3) head coach Adam Welsh said. “We have been working on possession. We want to maintain possession in the offensive zone.
“The girls did a really good job. They do a good job of what we do at practice, and they brought it to the field. They did really well.”
Madonna outshot Edison, 24-12. The Blue Dons took 22 shots on goal, while the Wildcats took seven.
“One of the major things so far this season is we are making progress,” first-year Edison head coach Gregory Hofmeister said. “It’s a new team. We came into the season with a new team, and it is a process.
“The progess hasn’t halted. It hasn’t halted at all. Now, it is just a matter of who wants to win more. They wanted it more tonight.”
Freshman Brynn Artman netted two goals and added an assist for the girls from Hancock County. Sophia Zaneski scored the other goal for the victors.
Mia Chiodo made seven saves in goal, including a couple key saves to keep the hosts off the scoreboard.
“She is our backup keeper,” Welsh said. “She hasn’t played for a long time. She did a fantastic job. I could not be more proud of her.”
Kaydence Habbit stopped 22 shots for the girls from Jefferson County.
“She made a lot of good saves,” Hofmeister said. “She is a good leader. She is a senior. She did a great job.”
Madonna took 10 goal kicks in the match, while Edison took eight. The Blue Dons had a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Artmann found the back of the net in the first half to give the girls in white a 1-0 lead. The shot was the 10th Habbit faced up to that point.
“Their goalie did really well,” Welsh said. “You had two young teams out there. It should be good competition in the coming years. It was two young teams.”
The girls in black had multiple good opportunities to score, but Chiodo and the Madonna defense was up to the challenge.
Zaneski opened the scoring in the second half, and then Artmann capped it.
“You can get frustrated,” Hofmeister said. “We are focusing on accountability. No one player makes or breaks a team. It is a team effort. We are trying to figure it out. If it takes the whole season, then it takes the whole season. We will be ready to go for next season. We are focusing on accountability.”
With the loss, the Wildcats remain winless on the season.
Both teams are scheduled to play today at home.
Madonna will take on University at 5:30 p.m. at the JC Williams Soccer Complex, while Edison will play Ridgewood at 6 p.m.
