Prep Roundup: Linsly girls swimmers win at Steubenville; Park basketball sweeps Buckhannon-Upshur

STEUBENVILLE — The venue and event were obviously different, but the two teams on top of the team scores of Saturday’s Big Red Invite held at the Steubenville High School Natatorium were the same as last week’s OVAC meet.

The Linsly girls and St. Clairsville boys brought back the top team prizes. The Cadets finished with 127 points, while the Red Devils accumulated 87 points.

St. Clairsville’s girls were second with 73 points and Indian Creek was second in the boys team scoring with 81 points.

GIRLS

Linsly won eight events during the course of the competition.

Junior Anna Norman got the individual success going for the Cadets, capturing the 200 free in 2:09.72. She garnered her second victory in the 100 fly with a time of 1:06.68.

Junior Berta Roca got into the winning act by claiming the 200 individual medley in 2:23.76.

Senior Liv Torner won the 50 free in 26.48. She was back in the winner’s circle in the 100 backstroke with a 1:04.75.

Junior Sarah Coha won the 500 free in 6:19.11.

The team of Torner, Coha, Roca and Norman posted a 1:58.27 to win the 200 medley relay.

Their second relay victory came in the 200 free with a team of Bea Fauro, Julia Sales, Coha and Norman winning with a 1:52.96.

St. Clairsville’s team of Claire Daubenmeyer, Luci Banks, Grace May and Adrienne Lowe swam a 4:17.65 to win the 400 free relay.

BOYS

The Red Devils were nearly as impressive, winning four events.

St. Clairsville’s first individual win came courtesy of junior Evan Yost who won the 200 individual medley in a solid time of 2:05.55. His second win was in the 100 free when he captured the gold with a 50.15 to win by more than four seconds.

The team of Yost, Luke Stack, Zach May and Brady Blacker swam a 1:51.19 to win the medley relay.

The Devils capped their win when the quartet of Yost, Blacker, Stack and May swam 3:41.83 to win the 400 free relay.

Martins Ferry senior John Consort swam a 1:49.49 to win the 200 free. His second win came in the 100 breaststroke when he posted a 1:03.89.

Indian Creek’s team of Colin Krantz, Hunter Rusnak, Franklin Mazzaferro and Sy Howell joined speed forces to win the 200 free in 1:41.35.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Wheeling Park 65, Buckhannon-Upshur 50

WHEELING — The red-hot Patriots continued their fine play with a lop-sided win over Buckhannon-Upshur on Saturday.

Sophomore Alexis Bordas had 18 points, eight rebounds and six steals to lead the Patriots. Natalie Daugherty posted 15 points, while Sophia Abraham posted 12 points.

Wheeling Central 56, Charleston Catholic 44

CHARLESTON — The Maroon Knights made the trip to the state’s capital worth the trip by defeating Charleston Catholic Saturday afternoon.

Central was led by Brooke Edge’s 21. Keira Wilkinson added 15.

Linsly 62, Barnesville 50

BARNESVILLE — The Cadets picked up a repeat win over the Shamrocks Saturday afternoon.

Linsly was led by talented sophomore Haylen Cook, who scored 23 points. Miriam Martinez added 19 and Rosa Sohlberg added nine.

The Shamrocks were paced by Alyssa Carter’s 14 and Madelynn Tyson’s 11.

Bridgeport 49, Paden City 34

WOLFHURST — The Bulldogs collected their second win of the season Saturday by toppling the Wildcats.

Freshman Hanna Brewer posted 19 points to pace the Bulldogs. Kaylee Bain added nine.

Mathis paced Paden City with 15.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Wheeling Park 61, Buckhannon-Upshur 43

WHEELING — The Patriots boys squad joined the girls team in the winners circle against Buckhannon-Upshur Saturday night.

The Patriots got out of the gates quickly thanks to four bonus goals from sophomore dandy Aiden Davis, who went on to score 30 in the game and hit seven from behind the arc. He also collected nine rebounds.

Mykel Davis added nine points for the Patriots.

Brooke 68, Magnolia 58

NEW MARTINSVILLE — The Bruins picked up a win over the Blue Eagles in the Rotary Classic Saturday.

Peyton Toepher led the Bruins with 28 points, while his brother Leyton Toepher had 18 points and six assists. Nick Cipoletti added 15.

Shadyside 72, Bridgeport 36

SHADYSIDE — Suddenly red-hot Shadyside doubled up the Bulldogs to complete the season sweep Saturday night.

The Tigers were led by 17 points from Dylan Booth, who connected on five treys. Junior Ben Wach added top support with 16, while senior Elijah Brock added 15.

The Bulldogs were paced by Colin Jackson’s 13.

Charleston Catholic 52, Wheeling Central 44

CHARLESTON — The Maroon Knights suffered a setback Saturday evening to the Irish.

Freshman Max Olejasz led the way for Central with 14 points, while Jeremy Ratcliffe added 12.

WRESTLING

Martins Ferry finishes second at Panther Classic

CONNORVILLE — The Purple Riders tallied 192.5 points, but finished a distant second at the annual Buckeye Local Panther Classic to Fairmont Senior, which accumulated 326 points.

The Riders were led by Jase Mahoney, who finished second at 113, and Dylan Ward, who was second at 120.

Indian Creek’s C.J. Spencer, who captured the 150-pound title, and Edison’s Gabriel Glen (285) were the lone winners from an area school.

Wheeling Park places second at Brooke Classic

WELLSBURG — The Patriots produced four tournament champions, but settled for second to Spring Mills Saturday at the Fred Ferguson Brooke Classic.

Park champions were Bradyn Lucas (144), Quinton Velas (150), Erick Brothers Jr. (215) and Hunter Means (285).
